1989 Wine

1989 Wine

With almost perfect weather, the 1989 wines are built for aging. In Bordeaux, the weather conditions are excellent with warm temperatures and sufficient, well-spaced rainfall to swell the grapes. The harvest is early and yields are excellent. The wines are majestic, especially in the Graves and Pomerol appellations, which produced rich, firm, and refined wines. A perfect balance between alcohol, tannin, and acidity means the wines are perfectly structured for aging. We recommend Château Lafite Rothschild 1989, Château Latour 1989, Petrus 1989, Château Clinet 1989... The sweet wines of 1989 are excellent. The best references are Château Suduiraut 1989, and Château d'Yquem 1989. Despite frost in late April and hail in the Hautes-Côtes, in Burgundy the grapes are ripe with a very good natural alcohol content. The wines are fleshy, well-balanced with supple tannins. In Champagne, the hot and sunny summer provides an abundant and excellent harvest. The best Champagnes from 1989 are Billecart-Salmon Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart 1989 and Krug 1989. Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the wines are also supple, rich, and suitable for long aging. The wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cornas, and Côte-Rôtie are particularly successful.
