The estate, known since the 12th century, was formerly called "la Mothe de Margaux", and did not yet produce wine.
It was established as a wine estate in the 1570s by the Lestonnac family, who decided to restructure the property and vineyard to create an estate as we know it today.
At the end of the 17th century, the estate reached its final size of 265 hectares, with only one-third dedicated to vineyards. Château Margaux was born!
Château Margaux has undergone several changes of ownership over the centuries; it was the property of Count Elie du Barry before the French Revolution, then of the Marquis de la Colonilla (1801) - who built the current mansion in place of the existing manor - Alexander Aguado (1830), the first banker to acquire a great Bordeaux château, then Count Pillet-Will (1879), and the Ginestet family (1950), major wine merchants. Since 1977, Château Margaux has been owned by the Mentzelopoulos family.
Château Margaux benefits from a temperate oceanic climate and a unique terroir consisting of a variety of soils and situated on a gravel hillock. The slope of its land ensures good drainage for exceptional grape quality.
The vineyard of Château Margaux covers 99 hectares, of which slightly less than 90% are planted with red grape varieties. The estate produces the most delicate wine of the Médoc, blending several grape varieties with a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, and varying proportions of Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc.
The wine of Château Margaux is considered the most elegant of the First Growths, combining finesse and delicacy, with a rich aromatic palette composed of red fruits and sweet spices. The concentration of tannins is perfectly balanced with the freshness brought by a slight acidity. The wine is complex and refined with a beautiful length on the palate. It has exceptional aging potential.
Château Margaux produces a second red wine, the Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, and a white wine, the Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux. The latter represents barely 4% of the production. And a third red wine, the Margaux du Château Margaux.
