2003 Wine

2003 Wine

Our opinion on the 2003 vintage: a heatwave year for an excellent vintage. In Bordeaux, the quality of the 2003 vintage is very good despite the extremely hot weather conditions. Some rain in September helped relieve the vineyards. The 2003 Bordeaux wines are good and balanced, they will age well.

This vintage was a subject of discord. Indeed, the Château Pavie 2003 caused a conflict between Jancis Robinson and Robert Parker, two famous wine critics. Robinson described this wine as "ridiculous," "unappetizing," and "overripe," which Parker hastened to refute.

In Sauternes, the vintage is exceptional. This heatwave year allowed for the harvest of intensely sugar-concentrated berries. Then, the September rainfall stimulated the botrytis cinerea, essential in the production of Sauternes. The wines have a richness not seen since the 1989 and 1990 vintages.

In Burgundy, the 2003 wines are equally successful. Also affected by the scorching temperatures during the summer, the harvest was early and significantly reduced. The grapes notably had a low degree of acidity, but talented producers were able to work carefully to produce great wines. As a result, the best estates produced excellent and fruity wines, but quantities are very limited due to the small harvest.

In the Rhône Valley, the high temperatures helped make up for the late budding and made this 2003 vintage a very high-quality one. Rhône wines are rich, structured, and opulent.

Our advice for buying a 2003 wine

In Bordeaux, the best appellations of this vintage are Pauillac, Saint Estèphe, and Pessac Léognan. Moreover, Château Margaux, Figeac, Ausone, and Angelus managed to produce a phenomenal vintage despite the difficulties encountered.

In Burgundy, the red wines from 2003 are rich and opulent. As for the whites, some will be less suitable for aging as they may lack acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, the Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cornas, and Hermitage appellations offer great wines. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, there are several notable successes.
