The 1947 wine remains a myth in the history of oenology: a year marked by extreme conditions, rare ripeness and 1947 wines of rarely matched power. From the first rays of summer, the heat settled in durably, accelerating grape maturation while accentuating water stress. Harvests, in certain regions such as Champagne, began as early as 5 September — an exceptionally early date to express the potential of this unique year.
Over the course of ageing, the 1947 wine can today be capricious: volatility, progressive fatigue or slight aromatic alterations are not incompatible with time. Nevertheless, under the most rigorous storage conditions, the great 1947 wine continues to surprise.

Bordeaux 1947 — The right bank in history, sweet wines at their peak

In Bordeaux, the solar heat favoured Merlot: the right bank — Saint-Émilion and Pomerol — largely dominates the vintage in charm, volume and concentration. Fermentations were delicate to manage with such rich grapes, and the wines produced from them offer opulent textures, overripe fruit and an aromatic profile that today evolves towards tobacco, truffle and candied fruits. The Médoc (Pauillac, Margaux, Saint-Julien) was more heterogeneous, but the finest gravel terroirs were able to capture the year. Sauternes and Barsac finally deliver ample, rich and sumptuous sweet wines, carried by perfect botrytis and preserved acidity — the true qualitative constant of the vintage.

Château Cheval Blanc 1947 stands as the historical reference of the vintage: power and finesse, complexity and delicacy in a single glass. Petrus 1947 and Lafleur 1947 share with it the crown of Pomerol. On the left bank, Château Margaux 1947 is powerful and concentrated, while Château Lafite Rothschild 1947 and Château Latour 1947 remain, alongside Mouton, the great signatures of the year. On the Sauternes side, Climens 1947 (rated 96/100 by Jean-Marc Quarin) and Yquem 1947 are two anthology-worthy sweet wines still in stock or regularly available for sale.

Burgundy 1947: record ripeness and sensuality of the 1947 grand crus

In Burgundy, the consistent heat and dry weather produced magnificent harvests, with grapes laden with sugar and a ripeness rarely matched since. Yields remained modest, but the quality is dazzling: the reds from the Côte de Nuits offer powerful, sensual wines with melted tannins and intact aromatic richness. The whites reached spectacular alcohol levels — 15.4° in Chablis Grand Cru — for a round, ample and powerful profile, with the finest bottles having retained a remarkable freshness nearly eighty years later.

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 1947 (Richebourg, La Tâche, Grands-Échézeaux) ranks among the most sought-after wines of the vintage, alongside Armand Rousseau (Chambertin, Clos de Bèze) and the Musigny Vieilles Vignes from Comte Georges de Vogüé. In the Rhône Valley, the tropical summer concentrated the grapes and produced wines of exceptional density.
