History and identity of Château Angélus

The history of Château Angélus is rooted in the winemaking tradition of Saint-Émilion for over two centuries. The de Boüard de Laforest family has been established in the region since the 18th century, but it was in the 20th century that the estate experienced its major qualitative development. The château's name refers to the simultaneous ringing of the angelus from the three churches visible from the vineyards.

Under the direction of Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, the estate experienced a spectacular rise, achieving Premier Grand Cru Classé A status in 2012. In 2022, Château Angélus chose to withdraw from the official Saint-Émilion classification, favoring an independent vision focused on the intrinsic quality of the wine rather than administrative hierarchy. Today led by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, the château continues a strategy of excellence based on parcel precision and faithful expression of the terroir.

Terroir and viticultural environment

Château Angélus' vineyard extends over approximately 40 hectares, located at the foot of the hillside and on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion. The clay-limestone soils at altitude and sandy-clay soils below offer a pedological diversity allowing for refined blending.

The high proportion of Cabernet Franc, planted on the most calcareous zones, constitutes one of the estate's signatures. This grape variety brings tension, aromatic freshness and vertical structure, while Merlot provides flesh and depth. The southern exposure promotes optimal maturity, essential in the great vintages of Saint-Émilion.

Production philosophy and wine style

Château Angélus practices demanding viticulture with yield control and rigorous berry selection. Parcel-by-parcel vinification is conducted in a modern gravity-flow winery, allowing precise work without excessive handling of the grapes.

Aging in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new wood, is perfectly integrated to support the structure without dominating the fruit expression. Château Angélus' style is characterized by structured power, a dense and velvety texture, and aromatic intensity marked by ripe black fruits, floral notes, spices and graphite. Over time, aromas of truffle, tobacco and cocoa enrich the complexity.

Aging potential and critical recognition

The great vintages of Château Angélus present remarkable aging potential, capable of evolving harmoniously over several decades. The years 1989, 1990, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2016 demonstrate the cru's ability to combine concentration, freshness and tannic precision.

International critical recognition is consistent, positioning Château Angélus among the essential references of Saint-Émilion wines sought after by collectors and investors.

Perspective within the Saint-Émilion appellation

Within the Saint-Émilion appellation, Château Angélus occupies a unique position thanks to its structured profile dominated by Cabernet Franc. It stands out with a more vertical architecture than Château Pavie, while offering comparable intensity. Compared to Château Cheval Blanc, it presents a more concentrated style, more marked by fruit maturity, while sharing with Château Ausone the requirement for parcel precision.

Alongside these great names, Château Angélus contributes strongly to the international reputation of Saint-Émilion. Through its assertive stylistic identity and technical excellence, it remains a reference for discerning enthusiasts seeking a great right bank wine capable of standing the test of time with power and elegance.
