To drink between 2001 and 2040

Tasting notes: A magnificent September weather allows harvesting each plot at the optimum moment. The grapes, highly concentrated in sugars and phenolic compounds, yield opulent and exuberant wines. The nose develops aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant, with smoky notes. The palate is rich, ample, and generous. The finish is long and harmonious.

Grape Variety / Blend: Merlot (~50%), Cabernet Franc (~47%), Cabernet Sauvignon (~3%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Maturity: Should be drunk

Food and Wine Pairing: Beef and venison

Jancis Robinson October - 2011

Very deep and with a rich, orange rim but great concentration. Still youthful and a return to Angélus. Silky fresh with lovely sweetness and absolutely lovely now. Pure pleasure. Spice and sweetness and fragrance. Great balance and vibration. What a contrast with 1991! Long and reverberant and great balance. Rich tea-leaf aromas. Very sweet. Long.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 1990 Angélus comes barreling out of the glass with big, bold, beautiful aromas of rose oil, cloves, smoked meats and licorice over a core of baked black plums, crème de cassis and raspberry pie plus hints of new leather and tobacco leaf. The palate is a full-on rich, powerful, full-bodied blockbuster, featuring bags of pure red and black fruit preserves layers and an incredible floral undercurrent, supported by plush tannins and lively freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. It's extraordinary to experience right now and yet should easily cellar for another 20+ years.

Falstaff November - 2015
Falstaff
A magnificent Saint-Émilion with an intensely purple-violet color. Very compact and dense with a deep, powerful character and closed aromatic structure. With prolonged contact with air, the wine begins to open up and reveal its great aging potential. Patience is required here, as its promise is undeniable. A wine like an iron fist in a velvet glove.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
At its absolute peak of performance, now the wine has shifted to a floral bouquet to get things started with nuances of roses, lilacs, and lilies before you find truffles, dark cocoa, blackberry, licorice and plums. Soft, silky and elegant, the wine feels soft and polished on your palate, before finishing with dark cocoa, plum, and truffle in the endnote. Not decanted, just popped, poured and enjoyed for 2 hours. There is no reason to hold off opening a bottle of this gem if you have any.

Château Angelus
Château Angelus

Château Angelus was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Emilion in 2012 (previously it had been 1er Grand Cru Classé B since 1954). It shares the top of the Saint-Emilion Wine classification with Châteaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie.

The Château Angelus vineyard is located on the hillside, a steep south-facing slope. The clay-limestone soil rests on a limestone base. The grape variety consists of approximately 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. In certain years such as 2003, the proportion of Cabernet Franc even exceeds that of Merlot! The wine matures for 18 to 22 months in new barrels. Since 2018, Château Angelus has initiated its conversion to organic farming which should be completed in 2023.

The greatest vintages of the château are Angelus 1988, Angelus 1989, Angelus 1990, Angelus 1993, Angelus 1994, Angelus 2000 and Angelus 2001.
