The bell on the Château Angelus label recalls the moments of contemplation of the eponymous prayer. She is the symbol of Castle Angelus. Even if it is touched up with gold and modernized behind its elegance, it expresses the values of tradition and high standards, in the service of the reputation of Château Angelus.

Very colored. Good intensity. Incense. Ash. Very fruity too. Ditto. For me, this is the most elegant Angélus I know thanks to 60% Cabernet Franc harvested at 13.5° natural alcohol. Slender on the palate, fleshy in the first part of the mouth, the wine develops pulpy and finishes tannic at the end, firm but without harshness and above all aromatic. Long persistence. To be followed. This wine will be talked about.

Complex and intense aromas of forest floor, wild berries and dried flowers. Full-bodied, with ultrasilky tannins and a long, long finish. Racy and classy. Wonderful now but has a long life ahead of it. Better than I remember.

Round, balanced and plummy without the structure and depth I expected to find in a 1996 Angelus - the wine is ready to enjoy now and quite a nice drink, but it lacks the depth and complexity one would expect from a top property like Angelus.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A massive, powerful Angelus, this wine exhibits a saturated blackrubypurple color as well as an impressively-endowed nose of dried herbs, roasted meats, new saddle leather, plum liqueur, and cassis. In the mouth, olive notes make an impression. This sweet, full-bodied, exceptionally concentrated wine is atypically backward and ferociously tannic. It was revealing more sweetness and forwardness immediately prior to bottling,.

1996 Angelus could be on already the down hill side. With light aromatics coupled a black raspberry and cranberry flavored finish and medium body, the wine showed less fruit and more acidity than when last tasted. Drink up.

Magnum. 45% Cabernet Franc, 55% Merlot. Healthy glow of ruby. A hint of herbaceousness on the nose. Very round and fruity on the mid palate. Just a bit angular – but it has the stuffing to continue to develop. Rather leathery finish, like the 2001. Lots of luscious fruit on the front palate. Neat and satisfying.

Château Angelus
Château Angelus

Château Angelus was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Emilion in 2012 (previously it was 1er grand cru classé B since 1954). It shares the top of the Saint Emilion Wines classification with Châteaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie.

The Château Angelus vineyard is located at the foot of the slope, on a steep south-facing hillside. The clay-limestone soil rests on a limestone base. The grape varieties consist of approximately 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. In certain years, such as 2003, the proportion of Cabernet Franc even exceeds that of Merlot! The wine ages for 18 to 22 months in new barrels. Since 2018, Château Angelus has begun its conversion to organic farming, which should be completed by 2023.

The greatest vintages of Château Angelus are 1988, 1989, the 1990 vintage, 1993 and the 1994 vintage.
