Appellation Armagnac
Armagnac is the oldest eau-de-vie in France (on the other hand, the best known is Cognac).
Armagnac is obtained by the distillation of dry white wine. Afterwards, the resulting brandy is aged in oak barrels, which gives it the brown-golden color and reveals the aromas. Located 150 km south of Bordeaux, Armagnac can be divided into three geographical denominations: Bas-armagnac, armagnac-ténarèze and haut-armagnac. There are different types of armagnac defined according to the minimum aging time under wood :
- The ‘VS‘ (Very Special or 3 stars): 1 year minimum
- VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale): 4 years minimum
- The ‘Napoleon‘ or ‘XO‘ (Extra Old): 6 years minimum
- The ‘hors d‘age‘: 10 years minimum
- The ‘XO Premium‘: more than 20 years
The vintage armagnac comes from a single harvest, the vintage is then necessarily displayed on the bottle of old Armagnac.
