Créer une alerte

The classified growths of Sauternes represent the excellence of Bordeaux sweet wines. Made primarily from the Sémillon grape variety, they owe their aromatic richness to “noble rot” (Botrytis cinerea) which concentrates sugars and aromas. Distributed across five communes including Sauternes and Barsac, these great wines combine elegance, power and complexity. The legendary Château d'Yquem, the only Premier Cru Supérieur, embodies the pinnacle of the appellation. Perfect at maturity, Sauternes offer notes of honey, apricot and white flowers, ideal for gastronomy and aging.

The FAQ

What are the criteria that allowed the Sauternes châteaux to be classified?

The classification of the Sauternes Crus Classés, established in 1855 at the request of Napoleon III for the Paris Universal Exhibition, was based on several precise criteria. The experts took into account the historical reputation of the châteaux, the consistent quality of their wines and above all the market sale prices at the time, considered as a reflection of their renown and prestige. This hierarchical classification into Premier Cru Supérieur, Premiers Crus and Seconds Crus remains today an emblematic reference for the excellence of sweet wines from Bordeaux.

What is the difference between a Premier Cru Supérieur, a Premier Cru and a Second Cru from Sauternes?

The classification of the Sauternes Crus Classés established in 1855 distinguishes three hierarchical levels based on the reputation, quality and market value of the wines of the time. At the top sits the Premier Cru Supérieur, a unique title awarded to the legendary Château d'Yquem, recognized for its exceptional longevity, complexity and consistency. Just below, the Premiers Crus — such as Château Suduiraut, Rieussec or Guiraud — produce rich, powerful wines with great aromatic finesse. Finally, the Seconds Crus bring together prestigious estates such as Doisy-Daëne, Filhot or de Malle, offering elegant and balanced Sauternes, often with excellent value for money. These three levels embody the diversity and excellence of the Sauternes vineyard, a worldwide reference for great sweet wines from Bordeaux.

How long can a Cru Classé from Sauternes be kept?

The Sauternes Crus Classés are among the most age-worthy wines in the world. Thanks to their high sugar concentration and natural acidity, they can be kept for several decades, or even over a century for the greatest vintages such as those from Château d'Yquem. In the cellar, a young Sauternes gradually develops complex aromas of honey, candied fruit, vanilla and spices. Most reach their peak between 15 and 40 years, depending on the château and the vintage. Good stable storage temperature (around 12°C) and darkness are essential to preserve their golden luster and aromatic richness.

The Classified Growths of Sauternes: sweet wine jewels of the Bordeaux region

The classified growths of Sauternes embody the quintessence of French sweet wines. Located south of Bordeaux, the Sauternes appellation produces exceptional wines thanks to a unique microclimate favoring botrytization – the famous “noble rot” – which concentrates sugars and aromas in the grapes.

A unique terroir for exceptional wines

The vineyards of Sauternes extend over five communes: Sauternes, Barsac, Bommes, Fargues and Preignac. The clay-limestone soil, the proximity of the Garonne and the Ciron, as well as the morning mists, create ideal conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea. This rare phenomenon gives the wines their unctuous texture and complex aromas of honey, candied apricot, white flowers and vanilla.

Sauternes today: between tradition and modernity

Today, the classified growths of Sauternes brilliantly combine tradition and modernity. True to their heritage, the châteaux perpetuate manual harvesting in successive pickings, guaranteeing the exceptional quality of botrytized grapes. At the same time, the sector is adapting to contemporary challenges: sustainable viticultural practices, conversion to organic farming and the creation of lighter cuvées to appeal to a new generation of enthusiasts. The rise of wine tourism in Sauternes – visits, tastings and immersive experiences – also contributes to revitalizing the appellation, confirming its place among the great sweet wines of Bordeaux, combining prestige, innovation and authenticity.

The great classified châteaux of Sauternes

Among the finest châteaux of the classified growths of Sauternes, some embody the excellence and worldwide reputation of the appellation. At the top, the legendary Château d'Yquem, the only Premier Cru Supérieur, produces wines of incomparable complexity and longevity. The Premiers Crus Classés such as Château Suduiraut, Rieussec, Guiraud, Rayne Vigneau or La Tour Blanche stand out for their aromatic richness and perfect balance between sugar and acidity. The Seconds Crus such as Doisy-Daëne or Filhot offer remarkable value for money and elegantly express the typicity of the Sauternes and Barsac terroir.
