Our opinion on the 1946 vintage : a difficult year everywhere in France

Overall, the 1946 vintage was not a great success.

In Bordeaux, the flowering was late with heavy rains in September. The quality of the vintage was generally poor but some wines were nevertheless good. As for Sauternes, the rain and the rot have had their effect on the vintage.

In Burgundy, August was marked by difficult weather conditions, with hail, cold and rain. This was followed by a relatively warm September, but the harvest was greatly reduced due to hail damage. As a result, the overall quality of the vintage is rather poor.

In the Rhone Valley, the 1946 vintage is in the average quality range, but it is overshadowed by the previous vintage, which is considered superior.

In Champagne, the harvest was extremely small and of mediocre quality due to problems of coulure and millerandage. Only Perrier Jouët managed to produce a vintage champagne in these difficult conditions.

The harvest was very limited, with a few exceptions. We recommend Château Latour 1946 and Château Mouton Rothschild 1946. These wines managed to stand out despite the difficult conditions of that year.
