Château Rayas
Domaine Rayas is located in the southern Rhône Valley, in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Founded by Albert Reynaud and passed down through four generations, this iconic family estate covers only 10 hectares of vineyards. Set apart, in the middle of the woods, on very sandy and poor soils, Rayas produces wines of unique finesse and elegance in the appellation. Grenache is the main grape variety for the reds, while the whites are made from Grenache and Clairette.
Long led by Emmanuel Reynaud, who recently passed away, the estate continues to perpetuate his legacy and singular style, making each vintage of Rayas a rare and unique wine. Among the emblematic vintages of Rayas are notably the Rayas 1990, Rayas 2006, Rayas 2007, Rayas 2009 and Rayas 1989, essential references of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Albert Reynaud, great-grandfather of Emmanuel Reynaud, was a notary in the Avignon region before a decisive personal turning point changed the course of the family's winemaking history. Having become deaf at the age of 45, he reconverted and acquired Domaine Rayas in 1880, then located away from the historic heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This founding choice marks the starting point of a unique trajectory, in an appellation that would see, over the decades, the emergence of estates that have become emblematic such as Château de Beaucastel, Clos des Papes, Domaine de La Janasse, Domaine Henri Bonneau, Clos Saint Jean.
In the 1920s, his son Louis Reynaud drove a structural evolution by bottling the wine of Rayas, allowing controlled distribution beyond the local context. This approach helped assert the estate's identity at a time when the reputation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape was beginning to establish itself on the national scene. Louis Reynaud then expanded the family heritage with the acquisition of Domaine des Tours in Sarrians between 1935 and 1938, then Château de Fonsalette in 1945 in Lagarde-Paréol, building a coherent ensemble of properties, comparable in its family continuity to other historic references of the appellation such as Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe.
In 1978, Jacques Reynaud, younger son of Louis, took over the management of Domaine Rayas and Fonsalette. A visionary and deeply independent winemaker, he asserted a style radically different from that of many Châteauneuf-du-Pape properties, favoring finesse and freshness where some estates seek more power. This approach, based on the natural balance of sandy soils and a precise reading of Grenache, forged a unique identity, now often cited alongside references such as Beaucastel or Clos des Papes to illustrate the stylistic diversity of the appellation.
From 1997, Emmanuel Reynaud, nephew of Jacques, took over the family estates. Already responsible for Domaine des Tours since 1989, where he had created the winery and structured the marketing, he ensures with discretion and rigor the stylistic continuity and international reach of Rayas, Fonsalette and des Tours. Until his passing in 2025, he contributed to positioning Château Rayas among the most sought-after wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
