Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Fully mature, with an exotic, kirsch, earth and wild, dark cherry profile, the wine is concentrated, slightly firm, fresh and with air, additional lush qualities emerge. I would not age this much longer. It is not going to fall apart overnight, but it is not going to improve from here either.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The Chateau Rayas 1988 has a very funky, rather bretty nose at first with mushroom, black truffle, a hint of wild mint coming through, complemented by more garrigues aromas with time. It takes time to settle: too bucolic at first but far more engaging after an hour in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with that fresh minty tang on the entry, very fine tannins considering how rustic the aromatics began but coalescing and finding its rhythm with aeration. Warm alcohol cloaks the finish: engaging and multi-dimensional.

Aromatic nose with notes of undergrowth and spices as well as herbs and cherry fruit. The palate is lively and complex with raspberry, earth and tar notes. It still has some sweetness to it, nicely balanced by the fresh fruity notes and subtle earthiness. Fresh, poised and drinking well now, this is a lovely wine.

Château Rayas
Château Rayas

The Rayas estate is located in the south of the Rhône region. Purchased in 1980 by Albert Reynaud, four generations of winemakers have succeeded one another to help this small 10-hectare family estate climb the ranks and produce great wines. The estate produces its wines under the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.

Today, the Rayas estate is managed and directed by Emmanuel Reynaud, great-grandson of Albert Reynaud. He also operates Domaine des Tours and Fonsalette, which were purchased by his father Jacques Reynaud several years ago. Under the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, the estate cultivates Grenache grapes for red wines as well as white wines with Clairette.
