The 2017 vintage will be remembered as a year of contrasts, marked by a historic frost episode but also by a very high quality in the spared terroirs. In Bordeaux 2017, the appellations Pomerol 2017, Saint-Émilion 2017, Pauillac 2017 and Pessac-Léognan 2017 deliver fresh, precise and elegant 2017 red wines, while the Sauternes 2017 seduce with their purity and balance. In Burgundy, the Gevrey-Chambertin 2017, Vosne-Romanée 2017, Meursault 2017, Puligny-Montrachet 2017 and Chablis 2017 produce harmonious, digestible and luminous wines. In the Rhône Valley, the Côte-Rôtie 2017, Hermitage 2017, Cornas 2017 and Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017 show a ripe, concentrated and expressive face. The Loire 2017 and Alsace 2017 complete this picture with taut, precise and aromatic whites.

The FAQ

Is the 2017 vintage a good year for wine?

Yes, but it's a contrasting vintage. Spring frost reduced yields in many regions, but the spared terroirs produced precise, balanced, elegant and aromatic 2017 wines. The greatest successes are found in Rhône 2017, Burgundy 2017, Pomerol 2017, Saint-Émilion 2017, Pessac-Léognan 2017, as well as in white wines from Loire and Alsace.

Is the 2017 vintage a good vintage for Bordeaux?

Yes, but selectively.

The estates spared by frost produced wines of great finesse: Pomerol 2017, Saint-Émilion 2017, Pauillac 2017, Saint-Julien 2017, Margaux 2017.

The style is fresher and more classic than 2015 or 2016, with supple tannins and pure fruit.

The Sauternes 2017 are particularly successful, with great aromatic purity.

Are 2017 wines still good to drink today?

Yes. The majority of 2017 wines are already open, accessible and very pleasant, notably:

Red Bordeaux: at perfect maturity today

Red Burgundy: very accessible, already expressive

White Burgundy: superb tension and brilliance

Rhône 2017: solid structure, but already delicious

Alsace / Loire 2017: freshness and precision

Great 2017 wines still have 10 to 30 years of potential depending on the region.

Vintage 2017: year of frost, low yields and great precision of wines

The 2017 vintage in France is first and foremost the story of a brutal spring. After a relatively mild winter and early budburst, a series of severe frosts in late April affected a large part of the vineyard, particularly in Bordeaux, the Loire Valley, Champagne and certain areas of Burgundy. On a national scale.

Once this episode passed, the vegetative cycle followed a rather favorable trajectory. The summer of 2017 was generally warm, dry, without excessive heat waves, with nights cool enough to preserve acidity. In several regions – Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône, Alsace – maturity was early, making 2017 one of the fastest vintages of recent decades. The harvest, started early, took place under mostly dry weather, guaranteeing excellent sanitary condition of the grapes.

For the wine taster, the 2017 vintage is characterized by pronounced freshness, often moderate alcohol levels, fine tannins and clear aromatics. The red wines of 2017 do not seek a demonstration of strength, but balance and precision. 2017 is a heterogeneous vintage in volume, but very qualitative in the great terroirs, with great 2017 wines promised to evolve beautifully.

Bordeaux 2017: historic frost, low yields and fresh style

The red wines of Bordeaux 2017 offer a more slender style than 2015 or 2016. The tannins are fine, the balance leans toward freshness rather than power, and the alcohol levels remain reasonable. In Pomerol 2017, the Merlots from well-exposed plateaus produce velvety wines, dense without heaviness, with a very beautiful expression of fruit. Saint-Émilion 2017 shows, in its best growths, an elegant face, chiseled, carried by a well-integrated acid structure. On the left bank, Pauillac 2017, Saint-Julien 2017, Saint-Estèphe 2017 and Margaux 2017 are in a classic vein, with ripe but not excessive Cabernets, beautiful aromatic definition and structures capable of aging.

Aging potential: the best red wines 2017 from Médoc and the right bank will be able to evolve for another 10 to 20 years while already offering well-rounded tannins today; Sauternes 2017 have an aging potential of several decades.

Burgundy 2017: renewed generosity, finesse of red wines and brilliance of whites

After several years affected by hail or frost, Burgundy 2017 was experienced as a relief. 2017 is a very pleasant vintage, offering both quantity and quality, with expressive reds and elegant whites.

The warm spring favored rapid and homogeneous flowering, while the summer, dry but not excessive, allowed regular maturation. The harvest, early but serene, produced healthy and balanced grapes. The red wines of Burgundy 2017, particularly in the Côte de Nuits, are distinguished by their freshness, gourmand fruitiness and supple tannins. The Gevrey-Chambertin 2017 present a lovely density without heaviness, with notes of morello cherry, sweet spices and emerging undergrowth. The Vosne-Romanée 2017 reveal a floral and spicy register, very refined, while Nuits-Saint-Georges 2017 express a slightly more earthy but well-balanced structure. In the Côte de Beaune, appellations such as Volnay 2017 and Pommard 2017 show an accessible face, already charming.

The white wines of Burgundy 2017 are among the great successes of the vintage. Meursault 2017, Puligny-Montrachet 2017, Chassagne-Montrachet 2017 and Chablis 2017 combine beautiful Chardonnay maturity with preserved acidity. The profiles are taut, saline, with precise aromatics of citrus, white flowers and fresh hazelnut.

Aging potential: the great white wines 2017 can evolve serenely 10 to 15 years; the reds of Côte de Nuits, well-born, will enter a very attractive maturity plateau over the next 8 to 15 years.

Rhône Valley 2017: richness, warmth and great aging cuvées

In the Rhône Valley, 2017 is a warm and dry vintage, marked by reduced yields, particularly in the areas most exposed to drought, but the best estates managed to work with these conditions to produce concentrated, rich and often spectacular wines.

In the Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie 2017, Hermitage 2017, Cornas 2017 and Saint-Joseph 2017 deliver deep Syrahs with ripe tannins and intense aromatics. The wines combine ripe black fruits, violet, pepper and smoky notes, with tight structures balanced by sufficient freshness. It is a great wine vintage 2017 for lovers of aging Syrah.

In the Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017 and neighboring terroirs, such as Gigondas 2017 or Vacqueyras 2017, express very ripe Grenache, marked by garrigue, spices and a generous texture. Here again, low yields have reinforced concentration. In rigorous estates, the heat translates into great amplitude rather than heaviness.

Iconic wines of the Rhône 2017:

Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune Domaine Jamet 2017 – Côte-Rôtie Terrasses Jean-Michel Gérin 2017 – Hermitage Domaine Jean-Louis Chave 2017 –Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine de la Janasse Vieilles Vignes 2017 – Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Pégau Cuvée Réservée 2017 – CLOS SAINT JEAN Deus ex Machina 2017.

Aging potential: the great Northern and Southern Rhône 2017 wines clearly fit into a long-term aging category, with 15 to 25 years of evolution possible for the best cuvées.
