Côte-Rôtie Appellation
The Côte-Rôtie appellation is one of the most prestigious appellations in the Rhône
The Côte-Rôtie appellation is located in the northernmost part of the northern Rhône Valley, which also includes the appellations Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray. The vineyard is characterized by very steep slopes rising up to 325 meters in altitude where vines cling to hillsides using man-made terraces and low walls. Today, the Côte-Rôtie appellation is highly sought after and considered the best in the Rhône by fine wine enthusiasts. The estates Guigal, Gerin, Rostaing, Jaboulet and Chapoutier are among the references that maintain the appellation's high standards.
Within the vineyard, there is a distinction between the Côte Brune in the north and the Côte Blonde in the south. The former, on clay soils, produces powerful and well-structured wines. The latter, on clay-sand soils, produces delicate wines. Syrah is the only red grape variety used, though Viognier can be added up to a maximum of 20%. With a deep red color, delicate nose of violet, raspberry, and spices, Côte-Rôtie wines offer beautiful tannic structure and very long finish. Excellent aging potential.
