Côte-Rôtie Appellation

The Côte-Rôtie appellation is one of the most prestigious appellations in the Rhône

The Côte-Rôtie appellation is located in the northernmost part of the northern Rhône Valley, which also includes the appellations of Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas, and Saint-Péray. The vineyard is characterized by very steep slopes that can rise up to 325 meters in altitude, where vines cling to hillsides with the help of terraces and low walls built by man. Today, the Côte-Rôtie appellation is highly sought after and considered the best in the Rhône by fine wine enthusiasts. The estates Guigal, Gerin, Rostaing, Jaboulet, and Chapoutier are among the references that elevate the appellation to its high level.

Within the vineyard, there is a distinction between the Côte Brune in the north and the Côte Blonde in the south. The former, on clay soils, produces powerful and full-bodied wines. The latter, on sandy clay soils, yields delicate wines. Syrah is the only red grape variety used, although it's possible to add up to 20% Viognier. With a deep red color and a delicate nose of violet, raspberry, and spices, Côte-Rôtie wines offer a beautiful tannic structure and are very long on the palate. They have excellent aging potential.
