Château Cos D'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel is a wine estate covering 67 hectares, located in Saint-Estèphe in the Gironde department. Château Cos d'Estournel is classified among the Second Growths in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. The vineyard's grape variety composition is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and a few percent of Cabernet Franc. The vines are spread across about thirty plots and have an average age of 35 years, planted in high density at 9,000 vines per hectare. Only plants over twenty years old are used for the first wine. Château Cos d'Estournel also produces a second wine called 'Les Pagodes de Cos', which comes in both red and white varieties.

We recommend the Château Cos d'Estournel 1971, the 1982 vintage, as well as the wines from the 1985 vintage. We also suggest the Château Cos d'Estournel 2000, the Cos d'Estournel 2003, and the exceptional 2005 and 2009 vintages. Finally, the Cos d'Estournel 2010 is remarkable.

As a historical anecdote, "Cos" in Gascon means hill of pebbles. Cos d'Estournel is therefore situated on an accumulation of gravel mixed with calcareous clay. This excess of gravel, specific to Cos, forces the vine to plunge its roots deeper to draw its needs from the soil. Making the vine suffer produces great wines, and Cos d'Estournel achieves this very well.

At the Château, harvesting is done manually. The blend of Cos d'Estournel varies depending on the year. Only vines over twenty years old are used for the first wine. Cos reaches maturity only after 10 to 30 years, with exceptional longevity for the best vintages. Neighboring Château Lafite Rothschild, Cos is a very great wine in the classic lineage of the most prestigious Bordeaux from the Médoc. The estate produces between 200,000 and 380,000 bottles per year.
