Our opinion on the 2016 vintage: a contrasting but surprising vintage. The 2016 vintage was marked by changing weather conditions, but it resulted in beautiful harvests. In Bordeaux, this vintage is widely renowned for being exceptional, even legendary. Despite disruptive summer droughts, the last rains before the harvest saved the Bordeaux wines. The harvest was slightly more abundant than usual, while displaying exceptionally high quality. The 2016 Sauternes vintage was very good, with high yields and rich, pure, and fresh wines, emphasizing sweet fruits.

In Burgundy, the 2016 vintage faced the worst frost since 1981. However, paradoxically, it is considered a good vintage with surprising wines, although rare due to low yields.

As for the Rhône Valley, the 2016 vintage was brilliant, following the success of the highly praised 2015 vintage. While the 2015 vintage was often associated with the Northern Rhône, 2016 seems to belong more to the south. However, both north and south produced intensely fruity and concentrated wines, offering a wide choice of high-quality reds and whites.

Champagne experienced a difficult 2016 vintage, but the quality was good without being excellent. Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier performed well, but some of the Chardonnay did not ripen uniformly.

  

Our advice for buying a 2016 wine

In Bordeaux, the most successful red wines come mainly from the Left Bank (Saint-Estèphe, Saint-Julien, Pauillac) and the Right Bank (Pomerol, Saint-Émilion). They are characterized by intense purity, elegance, and persistent freshness despite the tannins.

Burgundy red wines are rich, ripe, and well-balanced, while the whites suffered the most from frost, making wine production difficult for many producers. Despite these challenging weather conditions, the overall results were very successful.

The red wines from the Rhône Valley are good. The whites, however, are secondary except for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, which presents very successful wines with beautiful maturities.

In Champagne, the wines offer good fruit and nice acidity. Some of the best Blanc de Noirs may have a higher aging potential than Blanc de Blancs.
