The Saint-Emilion classification was created in 1955 and only concerns wines from the Saint Emilion Grand Cru appellation.

In stark contrast to the official Bordeaux wine classification, which theoretically remains unchanged since 1855, the Saint-Emilion classification is revisable every 10 years. Updates have taken place in 1959, 1969, 1986 (the 10-year interval was not respected), 1996, 2006, and 2012.

It distinguishes the greatest estates of Saint-Emilion across 3 ranks. Since its last revision in 2012, the Saint-Emilion classification is structured as follows:
