Our opinion on the 1984 vintage: a vintage hit by cyclone Hortense. 1984 is decidedly a small vintage in Bordeaux. A late flowering and a winter marked by cyclone Hortense. The consequences were terrible for the winemakers: decimated harvests and the inability to harvest Merlot, which altered the quality of the wines. Even Petrus produced only 20% of its usual harvest. It's not catastrophic, but the 1984 vintage remains very average in the Bordeaux region. However, in Sauternes, the wines are rather successful, pleasant, and still good. This is evidenced by the Château d'Yquem 1984.
