The 1982 vintage: a sun-drenched year, reds at their peak

Few vintages have left as deep a mark on the taste of wine as 1982. Carried by a hot summer and a ripe harvest, it produced reds of a richness and suppleness then unprecedented, redefining the very idea of great Bordeaux. Its reputation was built first on Bordeaux, where both banks succeeded in concert, but each region wrote its own story that year: abundance in Burgundy, brilliance in the northern Rhône, generosity in Champagne. It is a vintage that rewards informed choices, region by region, and whose finest wines have today entered their full maturity.

Bordeaux 1982 — the triumph of the reds, on both banks

1982 is above all an immense year for reds. The summer heat brought Cabernets and Merlots to an uncommon ripeness, yielding deeply coloured, rich and fleshy wines with ripe, well-coated tannins. The left bank is at its peak: Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe deliver powerful and complete wines, while Pessac-Léognan excels mainly through its finest growths. On the right bank, Pomerol and Saint-Émilion offer ample and velvety wines among the most seductive of the year. The sweet wines of Sauternes, however, suffered from autumn rains that hindered botrytis, the noble rot: the vintage proves more delicate there, best reserved for the most reliable names. It is therefore toward the reds, from both banks, that the vintage first beckons.

On the left bank, Château Haut-Brion 1982 dominates the Graves with a deep and distinguished substance, while in Pauillac Château Lynch-Bages 1982 embodies the generosity of the vintage, dense and fragrant. The opulent style of the year elevated many classified growths of the Médoc to a level rarely reached before. On the right bank, Château Pavie 1982 conveys the richness of the great Saint-Émilions of the year, while Château Clinet 1982 produces a velvety and concentrated wine in Pomerol. These wines, long cellared, are today for the most part at their full maturity.

Burgundy 1982 — an abundant harvest, to be savoured for its fruit

In Burgundy, 1982 was a year of great abundance. An early flowering and a fine summer swelled the volumes, at the cost of lower concentration: the wines are supple, fruity and easy-drinking rather than powerful. The best winemakers, who managed to limit yields and sort the harvest, produced elegant and well-balanced reds with a fine texture. It is a vintage for immediate pleasure, to be enjoyed for its fruit without expecting long ageing potential. The whites, ripe and generous, are also ready to drink.

At the top of the hierarchy, the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti drew wines of remarkable finesse from its grands crus despite the generous character of the year. In Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Trapet illustrates the success of the Côte de Nuits terroirs, better suited than the Côte de Beaune in this vintage. It is the finest climats and the most rigorous hands that make the difference in 1982, more so than the appellation alone.

Rhône Valley 1982 — a brilliant north, a south to be selective about

In the Rhône Valley, 1982 presents a clear contrast between north and south. The northern Rhône is in its element: the heat ripened the Syrah without excess, yielding rich, deep and well-structured Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, built for ageing. The south, struck by the same heatwave, produced more uneven wines, sometimes heavy and slightly cooked, which have aged less gracefully. It is therefore toward the north that the Rhône vintage holds its finest promise.

Guigal dominates the northern valley with Côte-Rôtie of remarkable depth and ageing potential, leading the successes of the year. The finest Syrah hillsides, on the top terroirs, have yielded wines that are still vibrant today. In the south, only the most rigorous estates preserved freshness and balance; elsewhere, it is best to open without waiting.

Champagne 1982 — a great, rich and generous year

Champagne produced one of its great vintages in 1982. After several disappointing years, a hot summer and a ripe, abundant harvest yielded rich, generous and vinous wines with fine substance. It is an age-worthy year, whose finest cuvées have gained in depth over time without losing their freshness. The vintage Champagnes of 1982 are today sought after by enthusiasts for this balance between maturity and tension.

The house of Krug illustrates the ageing dimension of the vintage, with cuvées of great density destined for a long evolution. The great prestige cuvées of the year, driven by the ripeness of the harvest, rank among the most accomplished Champagnes of the decade. Jura and Piedmont 1982 — vin jaune and great Barolos, off the Bordeaux beaten track

Beyond Bordeaux, 1982 offers two fine avenues for the wine lover. In the Jura, the vin jaune from Château-Chalon, aged for several years under a veil of yeast before bottling, is by nature little affected by the vagaries of a vintage: these oxidative wines, with aromas of walnuts and spices, offer near-unlimited longevity and a singular entry point into age-worthy wines. In Piedmont, 1982 is a great year for Barolo and Barbaresco, with rich, round and generous wines that are more approachable than the most tannic vintages of the region.

Château-Chalon ranks among the most faithful expressions of vin jaune, to be opened several hours in advance to fully appreciate its complexity. On the Italian side, the great Barolos of 1982 seduce today with their maturity and roundness, without losing any of their tannic backbone. These two regions offer a welcome breath of fresh air alongside the Bordeaux reds of the year.
