The history of Château Lynch-Bages is intertwined with that of the hamlet of Bages, on the heights of the Pauillac appellation. In the 18th century, the property belonged to the Lynch family, of Irish origin, who left a lasting mark on the estate's identity. Classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855, Château Lynch-Bages experienced a decisive turning point in the 20th century with its acquisition in 1939 by Jean-Charles Cazes.
Under the leadership of the Cazes family, the wine gained consistency and international recognition. Jean-Michel Cazes contributed greatly to its export expansion, before passing it on to his son Jean-Charles Cazes, who now heads the estate. This family continuity gives Château Lynch-Bages a strong identity, based on heritage, excellence, and attachment to the Pauillac terroir.
The vineyard of Château Lynch-Bages extends over approximately 100 hectares, planted on the gravelly ridge of the Bages plateau. The deep gravel soils resting on clay-limestone subsoils ensure optimal natural drainage and promote deep rooting of the vines.
This exceptional Médoc terroir is particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the predominant grape in the blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The exposure and proximity to the Gironde estuary contribute to thermal regulation and the gradual ripening of the grapes, contributing to the balance and structure characteristic of Château Lynch-Bages wines.
Château Lynch-Bages relies on rigorous viticulture and precise parcel selection. The complete renovation of technical facilities, culminating with the inauguration of the new gravity-flow cellar in 2020, enables highly precise parcel-based vinification.
Fermentations are conducted in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, adapted to each parcel. Aging in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new wood, aims to structure the wine without masking the expression of the fruit and terroir.
The style of Château Lynch-Bages is distinctive: a full attack, a firm yet ripe tannic structure, aromatic depth marked by blackcurrant, cedar, and spices, and a remarkable aging capacity. It combines power, straightness, and elegance, in the great tradition of Pauillac wines.
The wines of Château Lynch-Bages regularly feature among the Pauillac references in international tastings. Great vintages, such as 1982, 1990, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010., demonstrate an aging potential of several decades.
Over time, the wine develops complex notes of truffle, blonde tobacco, cigar box, and forest floor, while maintaining a solid and balanced structure. This profile makes it a must-have in the fine wine market and heritage cellars.
Within the Pauillac appellation, Château Lynch-Bages occupies a singular position. Less aristocratic in its image than Château Lafite Rothschild or Château Mouton Rothschild, more full-bodied than certain vintages of Château Pichon Baron or Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande, it has established itself through its consistency and assertive personality.
Its historic location on the Bages plateau and its attachment to the territory reinforce its identity. Through its balance between family tradition, technical modernity, and qualitative rigor, Château Lynch-Bages fully contributes to the worldwide prestige of the great wines of Pauillac and remains a reliable choice for enlightened enthusiasts as well as discerning collectors.
