History and identity of Château Haut-Brion

Founded in the 16th century, Château Haut-Brion is one of the oldest and most influential estates in Bordeaux. As early as the 17th century, its wines were already being exported and appreciated by European elites, making Haut-Brion one of the first growths to enjoy international recognition. Its classification as Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, unique outside the Médoc, confirms its exceptional status and its founding role in the history of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Terroir and viticultural environment

Located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, on the outskirts of Bordeaux, the vineyard sits on deep gravel ridges mixed with clay and sand. This emblematic Graves terroir ensures optimal natural drainage and promotes homogeneous ripening of the grapes. The temperate climate, influenced by the proximity of the Garonne, allows for precise and consistent expression of the terroir, contributing to the unique identity of Château Haut-Brion wines.

Production philosophy and style of Château Haut-Brion wines

The grape varieties are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc for the reds, while the whites are made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate favors controlled yields, rigorous vineyard work and precise vinification that respects the wine's natural balance. The red wines of Château Haut-Brion are distinguished by their velvety texture, their aromatic complexity combining ripe fruits, smoky notes and spices, and a structure of great finesse. The whites offer a depth, tension and longevity that are rare for dry wines.

Aging potential and critical acclaim

The wines of Château Haut-Brion are among the greatest age-worthy wines of Bordeaux, capable of evolving harmoniously over several decades. Their consistent quality and depth are unanimously praised by international critics, making them essential references in the market for collectible wines and great vintage wines.
