2009 CHÂTEAU HAUT BRION 2009

The 2009 vintage is a landmark year, with endless sunshine. Château Haut Brion 2009 is a very great wine that deserves all the attention. Quite similar to the style of the 2005 vintage and the 1989 vintage, with its tannins and concentration.

Falstaff February - 2020
Falstaff
Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, subtle lightening of the edges. Fine dark nougat, ripe black cherries, tobacco, a hint of liquorice, candied violets and cassis in the background, fine notes of precious wood, multi-faceted bouquet. Complex, dense, fine extract sweetness, powerful, ripe tannins, pleasant acidity, appears very fresh, mineral and firm, very long, a hint of dark chocolate on the finish, lingers for minutes, a Vin de Garde, should mature for another ten years may. So: hands off and better wait another two or three years!

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Not a lot of wines leave me speechless from start to finish. But this wine did! Still deep, dark, almost inky in color, the wine offers off the hook aromas of smoked truffle, cigar box, tobacco, black and dark red fruit with spice box, tobacco leaf and smoke filled nuances. Deep, rich, full-bodied and with this incredible blend of elegance, power and sensuality, this wine is going to age for decades. The wine was made from blending This 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 14% Cabernet Franc.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 2009 Haut-Brion is deep garnet colored and slightly closed and shy to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal sensuous notions of warm blackberries, plum preserves, mulberries and blackcurrant cordial with touches of star anise, mocha and damp soil. Full-bodied, taut and tightly wound in the mouth, the palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit and mineral layers with a very firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins, finishing long and earthy. This needs time!

Jeannie Cho Lee March - 2010

This intense, complex wine is majestic and incredibly rich. Despite the density, fresh fruit flavours are abundant and impressive. The wine has achieved a perfect balance between richness, depth and elegance. The finish is long and the wine expresses classic Haut Brion characters of cedarbox, spices, blackberries and aged tea leaves. This will no doubt be among the legendary vintages made by the chateau; a classic and long finish.

Château Haut Brion
Château Haut Brion

It was in 1855 that Château Haut Brion was honored with the highest distinction of Médoc wines: Premier Cru Classé (First Growth). Château Haut Brion is the only non-Médoc domain to be included in the Médoc wine list, as well as the Graves wine classification as a Classified Growth!

Its soil is similar to elsewhere as a brother of Latour. Without being the most concentrated, Haut Brion is the most noble of wines from Pessac-Leognan and its longevity is unparalleled in the industry. The silky tannins are always exceptional. Chateau Haut-Brion is the oldest and yet the smallest of vineyards classified as Premiers Grands Crus in 1855 (Château Lafite-RothschildChâteau LatourChâteau MargauxChâteau Mouton RothschildChâteau Haut-Brion)

Although the vineyard has been active in the region since at least Roman times, the first mention of vineyards of Haut-Brion dates back only to 1423. In the early days, the wines were known by the name of the parishes where they came from. In the case of Haut-Brion, under the leadership of Pontac, the wine first bore the name of this noble and respectable family. Haut Brion was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and since famous people have succeeded. The last of them, Clarence Douglas Dillon, was Minister of Finance of the United States under the Kennedy administration. As its reputation grew, the name of the estate came to replace that of its owners. The concept of Grand Cru is born! We find the first mention in the diary of Samuel Pepys, who wrote April 10, 1663: "I just tasted a French wine called Ho-Bryan (sic) which has the best and most special taste I've ever enountered."

Among the many great vintages of Château Haut Brion, the exceptional vintages are 1926, 1945, 1953, 1959, 1961, 1982, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000.
