CHÂTEAU HAUT BRION 2002

Tasting Notes: Surprising density of color that remains very bright despite its depth. Initially, a certain reserve hides the wine's aromas, but their richness is quickly perceived. On the attack, one is surprised by a sensation of dense and very complex fruit. Gradually, tannin fills the mouth. It is silky, smooth, melted, where a very fine woody sensation mingles. The whole is flavorful, almost "chewable", the length of the wine is great and very fine. The wine's structure has perfect balance.

Grape Variety/Blend: Merlot: 51%, Cabernet Sauvignon: 40%, Cabernet Franc: 9% (variations may occur from one vintage to another)

Maturity: 2010-2045

Food and Wine Pairing: Beef and venison

Surprisingly lively and fresh, this is still a seriously impressive wine. The high proportion of Semillon is now coming to dominate the Sauvignon, to give a wine that is finely shaped, full of creamy flavors of wood and some white peach. In 10 years, this will still be fresh, in 15 just mature.

Complex aromas of blackberries, tobacco and cedar follow through to a full-bodied palate, with ripe, velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very beautiful.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
As it closes in on age 20, the 2002 Haut-Brion is beginning to drink very well, opening in the glass with aromas of blackcurrants, plums, cigar wrapper, loamy soil, burning embers and violets. Fleshing out considerably with an hour or two in the decanter, it's medium-bodied, vibrant and concentrated, exemplifying the ideal of intensity without weight, with a deep core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and lively acids. An underrated wine that has rewarded patience, the 2002 Haut-Brion confirms that great terroirs over-perform in cooler, more challenging years.

Dark color, medium intensity and slightly evolved. Intense and fruity nose. Smooth touch of plum, animal hint, fresh oak note. It develops licorice notes as it evolves in the glass. Captivating. Tender and fragrant palate, with a smooth body that melts from the middle onwards, stiffening slightly in the finish without being rustic thanks to the originality of its aromas. Good length.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Medium/full bodied, the developed nose shows dark berries, olives, smoke, tobacco, herbs and earth. On the firm, masculine side for Haut Brion, you can drink this now, or age it. I doubt it will gain a lot more complexity with time. It's a nice Bordeaux, but not a great Haut Brion.

Deep garnet core. Nose is very closed with slight whiffs of dark chocolate and blackberry (similar to La Mission at this early stage). A pretty wine, crisp, medium-bodied but in no way profound. Very broody, muted and does not want to please. Perhaps this will improve but this was quite disappointing after such good recent vintages.

Scented and a little herbaceous. The most middle of the road, difference-splitting wine. Finishes quite dry. But there is admirable fruit on the way there. Neat. Dry. Very brisk. Next night it was more introvert, dry and a bit lean.

Château Haut Brion
Château Haut Brion

Château Haut-Brion is one of the most iconic wines of Bordeaux. In 1855, it received the supreme distinction of First Growth, an exceptional recognition as it is the only non-Médoc estate to appear in the classification of Médoc wines, while also being classified as Graves Classified Growth. Today it is an absolute reference of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Its terroir, similar to that of Château Latour, gives Haut-Brion wines a unique nobility. Without seeking extreme power, the wine distinguishes itself through its elegance, the finesse of its tannins and a remarkable aging capacity, often considered one of the greatest in Bordeaux.

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest, and also the smallest in surface area, of the Bordeaux First Growths, alongside Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux and Château Mouton Rothschild. While the presence of vines in the region dates back to Roman times, the first written mention of the vineyard dates from 1423. The estate was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and quickly gained international renown. Its reputation was such that it participated in the very birth of the notion of Grand Cru, mentioned as early as 1663 by Samuel Pepys in his famous diary. More recently, the estate belonged to Clarence Douglas Dillon, former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, further contributing to its prestige.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Haut-Brion are: Château Haut-Brion 1928, Château Haut-Brion 1945, Château Haut-Brion 1953, Château Haut-Brion 1959, Château Haut-Brion 1961, Château Haut-Brion 1982, Château Haut-Brion 1990, Château Haut-Brion 1995 and Château Haut-Brion 2000.
