CHÂTEAU HAUT BRION 2002

Tasting Notes: Surprising density of color that remains very bright despite its depth. Initially, a certain reserve hides the wine's aromas, but their richness is quickly perceived. On the attack, one is surprised by a sensation of dense and very complex fruit. Gradually, tannin fills the mouth. It is silky, smooth, melted, where a very fine woody sensation mingles. The whole is flavorful, almost "chewable", the length of the wine is great and very fine. The wine's structure has perfect balance.

Grape Variety/Blend: Merlot: 51%, Cabernet Sauvignon: 40%, Cabernet Franc: 9% (variations may occur from one vintage to another)

Maturity: 2010-2045

Food and Wine Pairing: Beef and venison

Surprisingly lively and fresh, this is still a seriously impressive wine. The high proportion of Semillon is now coming to dominate the Sauvignon, to give a wine that is finely shaped, full of creamy flavors of wood and some white peach. In 10 years, this will still be fresh, in 15 just mature.

Complex aromas of blackberries, tobacco and cedar follow through to a full-bodied palate, with ripe, velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Very beautiful.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
As it closes in on age 20, the 2002 Haut-Brion is beginning to drink very well, opening in the glass with aromas of blackcurrants, plums, cigar wrapper, loamy soil, burning embers and violets. Fleshing out considerably with an hour or two in the decanter, it's medium-bodied, vibrant and concentrated, exemplifying the ideal of intensity without weight, with a deep core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and lively acids. An underrated wine that has rewarded patience, the 2002 Haut-Brion confirms that great terroirs over-perform in cooler, more challenging years.

Dark color, medium intensity and slightly evolved. Intense and fruity nose. Smooth touch of plum, animal hint, fresh oak note. It develops licorice notes as it evolves in the glass. Captivating. Tender and fragrant palate, with a smooth body that melts from the middle onwards, stiffening slightly in the finish without being rustic thanks to the originality of its aromas. Good length.

Medium/full bodied, the developed nose shows dark berries, olives, smoke, tobacco, herbs and earth. On the firm, masculine side for Haut Brion, you can drink this now, or age it. I doubt it will gain a lot more complexity with time. It's a nice Bordeaux, but not a great Haut Brion.

Deep garnet core. Nose is very closed with slight whiffs of dark chocolate and blackberry (similar to La Mission at this early stage). A pretty wine, crisp, medium-bodied but in no way profound. Very broody, muted and does not want to please. Perhaps this will improve but this was quite disappointing after such good recent vintages.

Scented and a little herbaceous. The most middle of the road, difference-splitting wine. Finishes quite dry. But there is admirable fruit on the way there. Neat. Dry. Very brisk. Next night it was more introvert, dry and a bit lean.

Château Haut Brion
Château Haut Brion

It was in 1855 that Château Haut Brion was honored with the highest distinction of Médoc wines: Premier Cru Classé. This title is all the more exceptional as Château Haut Brion is the only non-Médoc estate to be part of the Médoc wine classification, but also of the Graves wine classification as a Cru Classé!

Its terroir is very similar to that of Latour. While not the most concentrated, Haut Brion is the noblest of the great Pessac-Léognan wines and its longevity is unparalleled in this area. The silkiness of its tannins is always exceptional.

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest and yet the smallest in size of the Bordeaux vineyards classified as First Growths (Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Haut-Brion). Although vineyards have been present in the region since at least Roman times, the first mention of the Haut-Brion vineyard dates back only to 1423. In the early days, wines were known by the names of the parishes from which they came. Haut Brion was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and since then, illustrious figures have succeeded one another. The last of these, Clarence Douglas Dillon, was Secretary of the Treasury of the United States under the Kennedy administration. As its reputation grew, the name of the estate came to replace that of its owners. The concept of Grand Cru was born! We find the first mention of it in Samuel Pepys' diary, who wrote on April 10, 1663: "I have just tasted a French wine called Ho-Bryan (sic) which has the best and most special taste I have ever encountered..."

Among the many great vintages of Château Haut Brion, the exceptional vintages are 1926, 1945, 1953, 1959, 1961, 1982, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000.
