Tasting notes : Our surprise and satisfaction are great in front of this wine. The color is very deep and sustained. The nose is typical of the vintage with notes of intense and ripe red fruits. The tannic structure is silky and rich. The wine is complex and perfectly balanced. It is without a doubt a very beautiful bottle of Haut-Brion.

Grape variety / Blend : Cabernet sauvignon (~45.5%), merlot (~45%), cabernet franc (~9.5%), petit verdot (~1%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Maturity : Must be drunk

Food and Wine Pairing : Beef and venison

This wine was phenomenal. Cork was like butter but the Ahso never fails. PNP and very austere off the bat. About fifteen minutes was all it needed though. Nose was very muted. Some dried fruit. Red twizzler, Forrest floor, pencil shavings, and dried fruit were all present on the palette. Tannins were silky. Nice long smooth finish. This wine evolved the longer I gave it in the glass. All present at the tasting were pleasantly surprised with this vintage. Can’t wait to drink it again.

Bristling with herbal, spicy gooseberry and apple flavors, bright and fragrant. Light in texture, elegant and delicately shaded with spicy oak. Polished, but zingy.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Quite a surprise in a difficult vintage, a strict selection and the superb terroir of Haut Brion triumphed over a very challenging year that produced many hard, relatively herbaceous wines. The color is a surprisingly saturated deep plum/ruby. Some sweet berry fruit intermixed with menthol, graphite, damp earth, and a hint of mushroom emerges in this medium-bodied, very elegant Haut Brion that is still firmly structured but has sweet tannin and surprising length and ripeness. The wine will always represent a sleeper style.

1993 Haut Brion offers a tobacco, leaf, smoke, herb and cassis scented perfume. Medium bodied, with a light, red fruit accented finish, this wine needs to be drunk up.

Château Haut Brion
Château Haut Brion

Château Haut-Brion is one of the most iconic wines of Bordeaux. In 1855, it received the supreme distinction of First Growth, an exceptional recognition as it is the only non-Médoc estate to appear in the classification of Médoc wines, while also being classified as Graves Classified Growth. Today it is an absolute reference of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Its terroir, similar to that of Château Latour, gives Haut-Brion wines a unique nobility. Without seeking extreme power, the wine distinguishes itself through its elegance, the finesse of its tannins and a remarkable aging capacity, often considered one of the greatest in Bordeaux.

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest, and also the smallest in surface area, of the Bordeaux First Growths, alongside Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Margaux and Château Mouton Rothschild. While the presence of vines in the region dates back to Roman times, the first written mention of the vineyard dates from 1423. The estate was founded in 1525 by Jean de Pontac and quickly gained international renown. Its reputation was such that it participated in the very birth of the notion of Grand Cru, mentioned as early as 1663 by Samuel Pepys in his famous diary. More recently, the estate belonged to Clarence Douglas Dillon, former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, further contributing to its prestige.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Haut-Brion are: Château Haut-Brion 1928, Château Haut-Brion 1945, Château Haut-Brion 1953, Château Haut-Brion 1959, Château Haut-Brion 1961, Château Haut-Brion 1982, Château Haut-Brion 1990, Château Haut-Brion 1995 and Château Haut-Brion 2000.
