The Romanée Conti appellation
Romanée Conti is a French Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) that produces Burgundy Grand Crus. Operated as a monopoly by Domaine de la Romanée Conti, the appellation was created in 1936. With a vineyard of only 1.6 hectares, the appellation produces Pinot Noir as its sole grape variety. Its area and boundaries have remained virtually unchanged since its origin. The vineyard soils are brown limestone and clay. Often presented as the most prestigious and expensive wine in the world, Romanée Conti is undoubtedly the most famous Burgundy Grand Cru.
The wines of the Romanée Conti appellation have a perfect structure, supple and tight, the wines are of great finesse. The Romanée Conti Grand Cru is a unique wine. These wines can be aged for very long periods: 10 to 20 years on average and up to more than 50 years of cellaring for exceptional vintages.
The 1988, 1999, and 2006 vintages are exceptional years for Romanée Conti. The 1952, 1964, 1966, 1985, 1989, 1996 Grand Crus and the 2002 vintage are excellent. Finally, the best vintages are 1961, 1978, the 1990 wines, 1929 Grand Crus, 1945 as well as the 1971 and 2005 vintages.
