Looking even better than it did last year, now that it's in the bottle, Chapoutier's 2016 Saint-Joseph Le Clos is impressive indeed. Classy notes of crushed stone and pencil shavings are joined by floral hints of violets, plus ripe cassis on the nose. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it comes across as dense yet not heavy (does that make any sense?), finishing with silky tannins and a tremendously long finish. It's a tour de force in Saint-Joseph, nearly equal in quality to Chapoutier's parcel-selection wines from across the river in Hermitage.

While medium-bodied in frame, it's a powerful wine speckled by smoke, ore and rich earth and held upright by fine, taut tannins. Founded in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, the house of M. Chapoutier is today the leading owner of the Hermitage hill. Since 1990, Michel Chapoutier has cultivated the vines using biodynamic farming and bottles separately the great named plots of the hillside — Le Pavillon, L'Ermite, Le Méal — as single-parcel selections of syrah and marsanne. Since 1996, each label has carried the wine's name in Braille, as a tribute to Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne.

Among the house's great vintages, the 1989 vintage and the 1990 rank among the pinnacles of Hermitage, while the 2003, the 2009 and the 2021 vintage continue this standard of excellence across more recent years. These are wines with exceptional aging potential, to be decanted and served with roasted meat or game.
