Combines fruit and terroir in spades, with notes of raspberry ganache and fig layered with tar, loam and garrigue. Builds slowly through the finish, delivering an encore of dark fruit and minerality, with a hint of grilled beef. A huge wine that demands cellaring.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Always the more structured of the two releases, the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac (100% Grenache) offers thrilling minerality in its licorice, dusty soils, smoked duck and kirsch liqueur-like aromas and flavors. Still youthful and focused, with medium to full-bodied richness, ample texture and solid underlying acidity and tannin, it will have at least another decade of longevity.

M. Chapoutier
M. Chapoutier

Founded in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, the house of M. Chapoutier is today the leading owner of the Hermitage hill. Since 1990, Michel Chapoutier has cultivated the vines using biodynamic farming and bottles separately the great named plots of the hillside — Le Pavillon, L'Ermite, Le Méal — as single-parcel selections of syrah and marsanne. Since 1996, each label has carried the wine's name in Braille, as a tribute to Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne.

Among the house's great vintages, the 1989 vintage and the 1990 rank among the pinnacles of Hermitage, while the 2003, the 2009 and the 2021 vintage continue this standard of excellence across more recent years. These are wines with exceptional aging potential, to be decanted and served with roasted meat or game.
