Falstaff May - 2021
Falstaff
From Syrah vines 90 to 100 years old: Strong garnet red with a broad, ochre-colored rim. Delicately smoky aromas of Black Forest berries, a hint of liquorice, some juniper, subtle wood notes, dark minerality, very complex and inviting. Juicy, complex, fresh sweet cherry, fine sweetness, silky-soft, with supporting tannins, a hint of wet stones on the finish, great length, firm and dry, remarkably youthful, almost still a touch too young to reveal its full potential.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Even better and a prodigious effort that hits all my sweet spots, the 2011 Ermitage Le Pavillon comes from one of the top terroirs on Hermitage hill, the granite soils of the Les Bessards lieu-dit. Spectacularly perfumed, with raspberry, blackberry, licorice, toasted spices and assorted floral nuances, this full-bodied effort has massive depth and richness, no hard edges and masses of finely polished tannin that emerge on and frame the finish. It will be approachable at an earlier age than either the 2009 or 2010, yet should nevertheless have 2-3 decades of ultimate longevity.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine November - 2023
Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Ruby red, virtually no signs of maturity. The nose is deep, smoky, cool, noble, with lots of spice, pepper, anise, and violet above. On the palate it is firm, with crisp fruit, lots of structure, top-notch tannins, very good acidity; the wine has freshness and breed, the balance is right, enormously powerful, it builds through the mid-palate, lingers long, leaving behind a mix of red and dark berries as well as liquorice aromas. This wine is still very youthful, is definitely a long-distance runner with great reserves and much elegance. Grand Syrah cinema. One can certainly drink it now, but better to enjoy it from 2028 to 2048.

Densely packed, with dark plum, currant paste and macerated fig fruit, offset by a zesty edge. Briary tannins stride along with the copious fruit, revealing lots of spice and bramble notes on the finish. Very dense for the vintage.

Dark, shiny crimson. Very meaty, savoury and the most obviously stereotypically Hermitage. Polished tannins but they are there in abundance. Very notable acidity and bone dry fruit. Wait ages before opening this. Lots of fresh, characterful fruit. Very serious indeed – for enormous eventual pleasure.

M. Chapoutier
M. Chapoutier

Founded in 1808 in Tain-l'Hermitage, the house of M. Chapoutier is today the leading owner of the Hermitage hill. Since 1990, Michel Chapoutier has cultivated the vines using biodynamic farming and bottles separately the great named plots of the hillside — Le Pavillon, L'Ermite, Le Méal — as single-parcel selections of syrah and marsanne. Since 1996, each label has carried the wine's name in Braille, as a tribute to Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne.

Among the house's great vintages, the 1989 vintage and the 1990 rank among the pinnacles of Hermitage, while the 2003, the 2009 and the 2021 vintage continue this standard of excellence across more recent years. These are wines with exceptional aging potential, to be decanted and served with roasted meat or game.
