The bell on the Château Angelus label recalls the moments of contemplation of the eponymous prayer. She is the symbol of Castle Angelus. Even if it is touched up with gold and modernized behind its elegance, it expresses the values of tradition and high standards, in the service of the reputation of Château Angélus.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Fully-mature, but, still with a lot to offer, the sensuous, rich, deep wine is concentrated with layers of black cherries and even darker plums, licorice, dark chocolate, and crushed stones in its earthy character. Not much decanting is needed here. Drink from 2022-2037.

Seductive nose with truffle, red fruit and perfume. Palate was fully resolved with waves of sensual red fruit sweetness.

A young, very modern and sleek '89. Inky color. Wonderful aromas of spices, blackberries, cinnamon and vanilla. Full-bodied, with loads of silky tannins and a long, berry-cherry aftertaste.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Possibly not showing as well as a bottle I had recently from my own cellar, this particular offering, which was about 50% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot, has a dark plum/purple color, but is still quite youthful. A beautiful sweet blueberry and blackberry-scented nose of olive, licorice and cedar wood is followed by a full-bodied and opulent wine, with hints of espresso roast and chocolate as well. It seemed to gain a lot in the glass, but the astringent tannins in the finish still seem a bit awkward and distracting. I think bottles I’ve had have generally shown better, although this is certainly an exceptional wine. It has just suffered somewhat in comparison with several of the other vintages. Drink now to 2030.

Jean-Marc Quarin October - 2010

Tasted decanted and blind. Dark, intense, beautiful and evolved color. Slightly animal nose, spicy, fruity and smooth. Soft entry on the palate then the wine develops aromatic on a beautiful mouthfeel and fine, liquorice tannins. Slow tannic evolution, savory, just a little heavy (extraction). But the wine is very long and very well constructed. It leaves an almost mineral impression in the persistence.

Full-bodied and quite chunky with a blocky rather than precise palate. Ripe, supple with moderate length. This is not one of the better bottles of 1989 Angelus that I've tried.

Château Angelus
Château Angelus

Château Angelus was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Emilion in 2012 (previously it was 1er grand cru classé B since 1954). It shares the top of the Saint Emilion Wines classification with Châteaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie.

The Château Angelus vineyard is located at the foot of the slope, on a steep south-facing hillside. The clay-limestone soil rests on a limestone base. The grape varieties consist of approximately 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. In certain years, such as 2003, the proportion of Cabernet Franc even exceeds that of Merlot! The wine ages for 18 to 22 months in new barrels. Since 2018, Château Angelus has begun its conversion to organic farming, which should be completed by 2023.

The greatest vintages of Château Angelus are 1988, 1989, the 1990 vintage, 1993 and the 1994 vintage.
