Tasting notes: After a wet winter and spring, the particularly dry month of September favors the concentration of tannins and color. The grape skins are very thick. The wines of a deep color, combine race and finesse with a magnificent precise tannic structure.

Grape variety / Blend: Merlot (~50%), Cabernet Franc (~47%), Cabernet Sauvignon (~3%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Maturity: Must be drunk

Food and Wine Pairing: Beef and venison

Cellar Tracker October - 2025

Incredible from the word go. Color medium ruby to deep garnet. Gorgeous. Aroma initially some prominent funk (but pleasant). After an hour or so, the funk is still there but a sublime old style right bank beauty. Seems like the best 88 Angelus I’ve had but it has always shown great. Barnyard earthy and some stone and hint if metal but plenty of red fruit and lots of complexity and lovely mouth feel. Perfectly integrated tannins and a medium to long finish.

(2009) Amazing aromas of truffles and fruit, with dried flowers too. Full-bodied and very soft, with ultravelvety tannins. Long and sumptuous. So much beautiful fruit and complexity. A joy to taste.

Dark and rich. A bit dry and horsey. Thick and polished. Very dry finish. Nicely balanced and refined. Long. Vital and quite fresh. Drying end. Best value.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
Still muscular and full of life, even if the tannins are melted and tinged with white truffles, and ripe melted autumnal fruits with traces of sweet cherry pie, cumin and incense. A cooler more classical vintage than the 1989 that we tasted so often over the week, and a lovely counterpoint. The amount of new oak would have been climbing at the time, with some malolactic likely to have been carried out in barrel also – a transitional time at Angélus, and a wonderful wine to take us back to those pivotal years.

Château Angelus
Château Angelus

Château Angelus was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Emilion in 2012 (previously it had been 1er Grand Cru Classé B since 1954). It shares the top of the Saint-Emilion Wine classification with Châteaux Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie.

The Château Angelus vineyard is located on the hillside, a steep south-facing slope. The clay-limestone soil rests on a limestone base. The grape variety consists of approximately 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. In certain years such as 2003, the proportion of Cabernet Franc even exceeds that of Merlot! The wine matures for 18 to 22 months in new barrels. Since 2018, Château Angelus has initiated its conversion to organic farming which should be completed in 2023.

The greatest vintages of the château are Angelus 1988, Angelus 1989, Angelus 1990, Angelus 1993, Angelus 1994, Angelus 2000 and Angelus 2001.
