Tasted at the 1947 dinner at The Square, London. The Beychevelle 1947, here sourced from a cellar in Yorkshire, retains a delightful bouquet that gently unfolds: cedar, sandalwood and touches of cooked meat. The aromatics remain fresh and vital though it lacks the exuberance of the Gruaud ’47. And to be honest, here the palate does not quite meet the promise of the nose: structured and foursquare, perhaps more like a ’49 in style, it fantails modestly towards its stately, correct finish. Fine, but I suspect there are better example out there.

Château Beychevelle watches over the Gironde at the southern tip of Saint-Julien, where the legend of the "lower your sail" gave it its name and the griffin-prowed ship its emblem. Classified growth in 1855, it draws from its deep Garonne gravels a predominantly cabernet sauvignon blend, complemented by merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot, and owes its nickname of "the Versailles of the Médoc" to its pleasure château.

Vinified plot by plot and aged in oak barrels, the wines combine silky tannins, dark fruit and great ageing potential. The estate's landmark vintages range from 1982 and 1986 to 1989 for the great classics, then 2005 and the 2016 vintage, the first to emerge from the new plot-by-plot winery. L'Amiral de Beychevelle offers the most accessible expression of the estate.
