PAVILLON ROUGE du Château Margaux 1993

Pavillon Rouge is the second wine of Château Margaux. It comes from the same vineyards and benefits from the estate's expertise. Pavillon Rouge is made from lots that are not selected for the grand vin, typically from younger vines. It offers a more accessible expression of Château Margaux's style. More supple and fruity in its youth, it allows one to discover the finesse and elegance of this prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classé.

Tasting Notes: The 1993 Pavillon Rouge is quite light, but fine and well-balanced with a slightly vegetal note that slowly fades as the wine ages in bottle. However, it is not up to the standard of recent Pavillon Rouge vintages and will probably not improve with additional aging.

Grape Variety/Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (~75%), Merlot (~20%), Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot (~5%) (variations may occur from one vintage to another)

Aging: 18 to 24 months in new oak barrels

Maturity: Aged wine

Food and Wine Pairing: Grilled red or white meat, Milk-fed lamb, Porcini mushrooms, Hard cheese

Blood red. Medium intensity. Evolved. Clean. Medium intensity. Discreet. Notes of cedar and dead leaf. There is still fruit. Quite clean (no vegetal). Paul Pontallier would have preferred to make a third wine so as not to have this type of taste which he judges a bit dry. For my part, it is true that the style close to wines of yesteryear because of these notes of tea and dead leaf surprises. However, the structure is not dry and the wine remains smooth.

Château Margaux
Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of the greatest wine estates in Bordeaux. In AOC, Margaux is listed among the First Growth wines in the official 1855 Médoc classification.

If it is a privilege to bear the name of its Margaux appellation, there is no doubt that Château Margaux does great honor to it.

For several centuries, this Premier Cru Classé has expressed to the highest degree the exceptional qualities of terroirs patiently gathered by several generations of owners. Maintained and harvested exclusively by hand with extreme care, the 78 hectares of vines (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) draw their richness very deeply from a particularly dense and thick clay-gravel soil.

Fermentation in oak vats, after which the wine is strictly selected, is followed by 18 to 24 months of aging in new oak barrels. A masterpiece among Bordeaux wines, considered by some to be the best, Château Margaux reveals finesse and opulence, depth and complexity in tasting, and develops a bouquet of rare elegance with notes of rose, violet, and black fruits, underpinned by tight tannins that require patient aging before reaching their full potential. The château also produces a second wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, and a dry white wine, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux (100% Sauvignon Blanc).

The greatest vintages of Château Margaux are: 1900, 1928, 1953, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990
