Jancis Robinson June - 2024

Deep garnet with brick rim. Wines getting noticeably darker now as we get to younger vintages. Smells generous and deep. So sweet on the palate. Rich and full of fruit. Chewy but harmonious, with still lots of fruit depth. Powerful rather than elegant. Full-flavoured, deep, maturely harmonious.

Still a dark ruby, this wine definitely does not show its age. Open nose, initially a hint of rubber, then pronounced pepper, leather, black tea, mocha, behind which there is plenty of dark fruit, black cherries, also menthol, a hint of mushrooms — super complex. On the palate, perfectly mature, the tannins largely melted away, a good acidity lends freshness. The finish is very long, spicy, with lingering notes of black cherry and pepper. Excellent.

A big blast of peppery red fruits, herbs, green leafy herbs black and green olives, and spice with crunchy red berries, the wine is big, intense, full-bodied, long and complex. It is close to fully-mature, which could take another 3-5 years, where it should remain for at least another 2 decades with ease.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Lacking that extra dimension of freshness and purity of the '90, the 1989 Hermitage la Chapelle is still a fabulous wine that offers sensational aromatic fireworks to go with full-bodied richness and depth. Showing classic la Chapelle smoked meats, currants, wood smoke and chocolate, this beauty hits the palate with no hard edges, a blockbuster texture and a finish that just won't quit. It shows the slightly more masculine, austere edge of the vintage, but the tannin is beautifully sweet and it packs a serious amount of fruit in the mid-palate. I've had a few tired bottles of this over the past few years, so provenance is key. Nevertheless, well-stored bottles will continue to drink beautifully for another couple decades.

Dark ruby, quite warm colour. Fabulous nose. Peppery and rich, with black fruits, coffee and juicy cherry note, some mushroomy notes and hints of damp undergrowth. A vice-like grip of lemon acidity and firm tannins dominates as it strikes the palate, but then there is good blackberry fruit and a nice fleshiness to the texture. Really complex and structured. Needs more time, but very, very fine indeed.

Paul Jaboulet Aine
Paul Jaboulet Aine

For almost two centuries, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has been offering consumers the product of ancestral expertise, placing excellence at the heart of its strategy. To perpetuate these values, the company strengthens this heritage both in the vineyard through new acquisitions and in the quality of the wines while respecting the environment. The diversity of terroirs in the "lieux dits" gives the wine a particular identity through the blending of different plots. Its La Chapelle cuvée, based on the hills of Hermitage, reigns over the Rhône Valley. In the 13th century, returning from the Crusades, it welcomed the Chevalier de Stérimberg. Later it would become the family's flagship, Hermitage La Chapelle, offering great sensations to tasters. The 1961 vintage will be classified among the Twelve Mythical Bottles of the 20th century, with a few bottles and magnums still sleeping at Jaboulet and in some cellars around the world. The name of Hermitage "La Chapelle" is linked to the small Saint-Christophe chapel overlooking the terraced vineyard dominating the Rhône. These Syrahs are planted on rich and varied soils with a great diversity of terroirs (les Bessards, les Greffieux, le Méal and les Rocoules). It is from the richness of these different terroirs that the complexity of Hermitage La Chapelle is born.

The finest vintages of Hermitage La Chapelle: 1997, 1996, 1995, 1991, 1990, 1989, 1988, 1985, 1982, 1979, 1978, 1971, 1970, 1966, 1964, 1962, 1961, 1959, 1949.
