Expert's opinions

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle lived up to its reputation on this occasion, and of the three titans (1990, 1978 and 1961), it was probably my favorite. Still inky colored and ruby at the rim, it offers an absolutely profound bouquet of sweet cassis, smoked meats, chocolate, licorice and spice. This is followed by a full-bodied, insanely textured, pure and hedonistic palate that has that perfect mix of still-vibrant fruit and ample secondary nuances. It will continue to evolve for decades, but I'd happily open bottles today.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Deep in color, with power, intensity, vibrancy, and a boatload of herbs, olives, tobacco wrapper, spice, black and red fruits. The wine is full-bodied, structured and vibrant, finishing with a wealth of red and black fruits, green olives, and herbs with real staying power. This is no longer young, but it is not fully mature, for that, you need to wait maybe 5-10 years. This could be a 75 year wine if well-stored.

Wine Spectator December - 1999
Wine Spectator
As expected from this ideal vintage, this '90 is sensational. Inky in color and solidly anchored in its terroir, it springs to life with a symphony of flavors, from mineral to wet earth and blackberry. Marvelous balance among fruit, acidity and smooth tannins. Delicious now, but can hold.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Dark color, leather tar, ripe cherry fruit, herbs, Christmas spices, celery. Tight on the palate, still stands like a one in the glass, significantly more lively than a 90 from a half bottle tasted a few years ago, the tannins have largely melted away, a good acidity supports the fruit that is still present, pithy and with a lot of pressure on the middle palate The wine has a long finish and ends dark fruity with some truffles. A noticeably mature wine that still has some reserves.

Tom Cannavan January - 1999

Dense, youthful crimson colour. Dark, brooding aromas. Caramel, spices, plummy black fruit and a super-ripe, mint-humbug intensity. Palate is very, very tannic, swamping rich, jammy blackcurrant fruit. This is full and luscious, but the wine is braced by fierce tannins and searing acidity. A very serious wine and with huge potential.

A gorgeous La Chapelle that is intense, concentrated and filled with floral, spicy and gamey flavors. A complex, powerful wine still at its peak with a lingering finish.

Very dark blackish ruby. Masses of fine sediment. Meaty and pungent on the nose. Proper Hermitage!  Sweet palate entry and lots of evolution into a sweet leathery tarmacadam whole with real grip still.
