Mature La Chapelle has a wonderful floral caress, and even in a vintage that was warm but rainy, it continues to deliver as it slides towards 40 years old. Holding its colour, a soft but still vibrant ruby with pale russet edging. Sink into layers of white truffle, black tea, wild strawberry, cranberry, broth and saffron. Tertiary for sure, fully in its drinking window, melted tannins, fragrant and balanced with fresh acidities, a delicious wine, finely wound with clarity of expression.

Now, I really have a soft spot for this La Chapelle and it is drinking perfectly now. A very seductive nose instantly has you hooked with blackberry leaf, undergrowth, thyme, dried fruits and a touch of boot polish. Great definition and very natural. The palate just has a beautiful balance with vibrant, natural acidity and slightly grainy tannins. The finish is so refined with hints of white pepper and briary. Very good length – this is just a lovely Hermitage that dances beautifully on the palate.

Even crimson colour with orange at rim. Really pungently aromatic on the nose. Grilled meats and smoke, but vivid raspberry fruit too. This is a very full and concentrated wine with lots of red fruit flavours and a cherryish acidity and firmness to the fruit. Long and still tannic, with lots of spicy flavours in the finish.

Deep garnet with brick rim. Very rich on the nose. Rich in fruit but meaty, too. Fragrant with undergrowth. Juicy, fresh and so full of life for a wine of this age. Bright and still big and chewy. Lots of pleasure in a such a mature wine.

For almost two centuries, Paul Jaboulet Aîné has been offering consumers the product of ancestral expertise, placing excellence at the heart of its strategy. To perpetuate these values, the company strengthens this heritage both in the vineyard through new acquisitions and in the quality of the wines while respecting the environment. The diversity of terroirs in the "lieux dits" gives the wine a particular identity through the blending of different plots. Its La Chapelle cuvée, based on the hills of Hermitage, reigns over the Rhône Valley. In the 13th century, returning from the Crusades, it welcomed the Chevalier de Stérimberg. Later it would become the family's flagship, Hermitage La Chapelle, offering great sensations to tasters. The 1961 vintage will be classified among the Twelve Mythical Bottles of the 20th century, with a few bottles and magnums still sleeping at Jaboulet and in some cellars around the world. The name of Hermitage "La Chapelle" is linked to the small Saint-Christophe chapel overlooking the terraced vineyard dominating the Rhône. These Syrahs are planted on rich and varied soils with a great diversity of terroirs (les Bessards, les Greffieux, le Méal and les Rocoules). It is from the richness of these different terroirs that the complexity of Hermitage La Chapelle is born.
