The history of Château Du Tertre

Château Du Tertre is one of the oldest properties in Bordeaux, dating back nearly 1000 years, with its origins in the 12th century.

In the 15th century, Thomas de Montaigne became the lord of the estate following his marriage to Jacquette d'Arsac, who gave her name to the property.

Its vineyard was established in the 18th century by Pierre Mitchell, of British origin and founder of the first Bordeaux glassworks. Château Du Tertre was thus born in 1736.

Many owners have succeeded at the head of the estate; Henri de Koenigswarter (19th century), Achille de Wilde (1925) before being bought by the Capbern-Gasquetton family in 1961, who also owns Château Calon-Ségur in Saint-Estèphe. Significant renovation work was undertaken as well as the replanting of the vineyard.

In 1997, the estate became the property of Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma. The family made significant investments to modernize the vineyard and the winery.

In 2021, Château Du Tertre passed into the hands of CNP Assurances, which entrusted its operation to the Helfrich family (Grands Chais de France).

What are the characteristics of Château Du Tertre wines?

Château Du Tertre owns a 52-hectare vineyard in one continuous piece that has remained unchanged since 1855. It is planted on the heights of a plateau, the top of the gravelly ridge of Arsac and the highest point of the Margaux appellation.

On this magnificent terroir, the vines, approximately 40 years old, are a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (43%), Merlot (33%), Cabernet Franc (19%), and Petit Verdot (5%), planted on sandy-clay gravel soils, ensuring optimal drainage of rainwater and deep rooting.

The wines are produced with respect for the environment, and their quality is paramount. This is why 11 ha of the vineyard are managed biodynamically and 41 ha using integrated pest management. The estate was a pioneer in the Médoc in using egg-shaped concrete vats to preserve minerality in the wines.

Château de Tertre produces a wine with great personality and freshness. It features aromas of red and black fruits, spices, with a beautiful tannic structure. This wine from old vines is full of length and tension.

The second wine of Château du Tertre, Les Hauts du Tertre, is produced similarly to the grand vin, but from younger vines and with a majority of Merlot. It's a fruity, elegant, and silky wine with supple tannins, worthy of Margaux wines.
