PAVILLON ROUGE du Château Margaux 1988

Pavillon Rouge is the second wine of Château Margaux. It comes from the same vineyards and benefits from the estate's expertise. Pavillon Rouge is made from lots that are not selected for the grand vin, generally from vines that are still too young. It offers a more accessible expression of Château Margaux's style. More supple and fruity in its youth, it allows you to discover the finesse and elegance of this prestigious First Growth.

Tasting Notes: Pavillon Rouge 1988 has a classic balance, with a fine tannic structure and lots of elegance. Bottle aging has given it the smoothness it lacked in its youth. It is ready to drink now and we probably cannot expect it to improve much more

Grape Variety/Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (~75%), Merlot (~20%), Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot (~5%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Aging: 18 to 24 months in new oak barrels

Maturity: Aged wine

Food and Wine Pairing: Grilled red or white meat, Suckling lamb, Porcini mushrooms, Hard cheeses

Cellar Tracker January - 2015

The wine pours a ruby, tawny color with very long legs. Surprisingly for a wine this age, there is minimal bricking at the edges. The first thing that comes to mind is the concentration of the bouquet. On the nose is a focused, powerful yet elegant melange of soy sauce, floral notes, strawberries, truffles and burnished leather and sous bois. Great extraction. On the palate, the wine is unctuous and thick with a mineral backbone. The sharpness of alcohol and rustic tannins are still there. Definitely old school Bordeaux style. Flavors of soy sauce, preserved plums, kirsch, mint, blackberries and mushrooms come to the fore. Finish is of medium length, lasting around twenty seconds or so. The ending is quite complex with a tad of fat.

Red. Dark. Medium intensity. Evolved. Clean. Medium intensity. Quite fine. Fruity and floral. Slightly vegetal touch. Soft attack, developing on a structure with a straight form and fine mouthfeel. The evolution is smooth in the mid-palate then stiffens in the finish, on austere tannins even if they are aromatic. Good persistence. This wine can be tasted, but will keep further. The tannin will undoubtedly always lack the coating of better accomplished maturity and will retain a slight dryness.

Château Margaux
Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of the greatest wine estates in Bordeaux. In AOC, Margaux is listed among the First Growth wines in the official 1855 Médoc classification.

If it is a privilege to bear the name of its Margaux appellation, there is no doubt that Château Margaux does great honor to it.

For several centuries, this Premier Cru Classé has expressed to the highest degree the exceptional qualities of terroirs patiently gathered by several generations of owners. Maintained and harvested exclusively by hand with extreme care, the 78 hectares of vines (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) draw their richness very deeply from a particularly dense and thick clay-gravel soil.

Fermentation in oak vats, after which the wine is strictly selected, is followed by 18 to 24 months of aging in new oak barrels. A masterpiece among Bordeaux wines, considered by some to be the best, Château Margaux reveals finesse and opulence, depth and complexity in tasting, and develops a bouquet of rare elegance with notes of rose, violet, and black fruits, underpinned by tight tannins that require patient aging before reaching their full potential. The château also produces a second wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, and a dry white wine, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux (100% Sauvignon Blanc).

The greatest vintages of Château Margaux are: 1900, 1928, 1953, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990
