Wine Spectator November - 1998

Though this has always been an outstanding '88, I never thought it was classic quality--but this wine proves otherwise. Ink-colored, with an impressive concentration of mineral, currant and berry flavors. Full-bodied, with huge, velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
A good vintage, the first of an exceptional trio, that remains well structured at this point, with rose petals, fennel and grilled sage, cracked pepper, cedar, cassis and loganberry, starting to soften its tannic grip but still clearly delivering Latour confidence.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The best showing yet for a wine from this under-rated vintage, the dark garnet-colored 1988 Latour reveals slight amber at the edge. A bouquet of melted tar, plums, black currants, cedar, and underbrush is followed by a sweet entry, with medium to full body, excellent ripeness, and mature tannin. It is a classic, elegant Latour with more meaty, vegetable-like flavors than are found in a riper year, such as 1989 and 1990. The 1988 has just begun to enter its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for 25 years. Anticipated maturity: now-2025.

Much more intense than Mouton. Rich blackberry/cassis plus roasted coffee on nose. Still very tight and quite austere this needs another 5 yrs+. Similar traditional style of Pauillac to Mouton.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Tobacco, earth, cassis and spicy aromatics are the first thing you notice. The wine has a rustic feel in the mouth. It is solid and four square in style, finishing with cassis flavors. This will last, but I am not sure it's going to improve.

Dark color, of medium intensity and very evolved. Moderately aromatic nose, with a touch of tar. Tender palate, still fruity, fragrant, finishing with medium length and a hint of cedar.

Deep crimson. Looks more youthful than the 1994. Fireworks fragrance. A little gentler and suppler than the 1998. Softening. Very correct and very typical.

Château Latour
Château Latour

Château Latour is a Bordeaux wine estate that produces wines under the Pauillac appellation. Premier Cru Classé in the Official Classification of Bordeaux wines created in 1855. It is undoubtedly a reference in the Médoc.

Created around 1680, the Château Latour vineyard is one of the oldest in the Médoc. At the heart of the estate, the main plot, named "l'Enclos", consists of 47 hectares of old vines that are preciously maintained, as they are the only ones capable of giving birth to the "Grand Vin". The 18 hectares of external plots, the vines less than 10 years old, and any declassified cuvées produce the estate's second wine, "Les Forts de Latour". Château Latour wine is an example of consistency regardless of the quality of the vintage. Firm, tannic and concentrated in its youth...

Latour is the very example of excellence, in both good and bad years. Among the greatest vintages, the château's finest achievements: 1920, 1929, 1949, 1955, 1959, 1961, 1970, 1982, 1990, 2000.
