Tasting notes: The wines are dense, with candied, wild, almost exotic aromas for Latour. Opulent in their youth, they remain rich, powerful and very concentrated, particularly marked by the vintage conditions.

Grape variety/Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon (~75%), Merlot (~23%), Cabernet Franc (~2%), Petit Verdot (~2%) (variations may occur from one vintage to another)

Aging: The wine is aged in new oak barrels, renewed each year.

Maturity: (2019 - 2035) - Ready to drink or keep

Food and Wine Pairing: Château Latour wines pair perfectly with beef, game and poultry in general. Also worth mentioning are dishes such as truffle omelette, Pauillac milk-fed lamb or porcini mushroom ravioli. As for cheese, Maroilles will pair perfectly with this red wine.

Remains distinctly exotic, with roasted, opulent autumnal fruits, dense and velvety tannins, blackberry, baking spice, sandalwood, crayon, smoked earth, tobacco leaf. A famously hot vintage, and interesting to see that in July they dropped 50% of the berries from the young vines toi minimise water stress. There was some bottle variation with this wine in the tasting, as is typical in older wines – but of the four vintages we were trying, it was only the 1989 that showed any signs of variation. The earliest growing season since 1893, with harvest beginning on August 31 and lasting through to September 21. A significant year in the wider sense for Latour also, as in 1989 the shares changed from Pearson as majority owners to Allied Lyons, who had been minority shareholders since the 1960s but would now become the stewards of the property, only for four years it would turn out, selling in 1993 to François Pinault. 100% new oak.

A shy Latour that is structured, filled with tobacco, cocoa and black tea flavors. Despite being decanted for over an hour, this bottle of 1989 is still retrained and not that expressive. The finish is long and the tannins, though high, are very well handled.

Château Latour

Château Latour is one of the most iconic estates of the Pauillac appellation and a founding reference in the history of Bordeaux winemaking. Its name appears as early as the 14th century, linked to the presence of a watchtower on the Gironde estuary, whose proximity still profoundly shapes the identity of the vineyard. As early as the 18th century, the wines of Château Latour were recognized for their consistency and their aging potential, establishing themselves among the greatest wines of the Médoc.

Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification, Château Latour holds a central place at the very top of the Bordeaux hierarchy. The estate is built on a remarkably homogeneous terroir of deep gravels dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives its wines a powerful structure, remarkable depth, and a great consistency of expression.

The signature of Château Latour is defined by a dense tannic architecture and an exacting construction, favoring precision and longevity over immediate appeal. The estate has withdrawn from en primeur sales: it keeps its bottles at the property and releases them only at maturity. This patience can be read in its legendary vintages, from the 1945 vintage to the 1961 wine, from 1982 to 1990 through to 2009, illustrating the estate's ability to consistently express the excellence of the Pauillac terroir and the singularity of its style.
