Wine 1990 1er Cru Classé  Bordeaux Margaux

The weather conditions were similar to those of 1989, with a very hot and dry summer. As a result, the young vines were likely suffering from drought. Fortunately, the September rains were extremely beneficial to the final ripening of the grapes, which were harvested under the sun.
1990 is a very qualitative vintage throughout the Bordeaux wine region and at Château Margaux. Château Margaux 1990 is of great finesse and remarkable elegance. This Premier Cru Classé can be enjoyed now, or kept for several more decades.

Dark ruby, violet reflections, watery rim. Very inviting bouquet of black cherries, a hint of caramel and fine roasted aromas, plus cassis and candied violets, an enchanting fragrance. Juicy, salty, characterized by plenty of fruit expression, perfectly integrated tannins, chocolatey nuances, white pepper. A wine with finesse and certain aging potential.

Strong Bordeaux red, youthful sheen. Intense nose, very fragrant, still with roasted aromas, black tea, also dried flowers and freshly cut wood, a wonderful aromatic delight. Soft and accessible on the attack, flattering and with just the right maturity, the tannins have largely melted away, the acidity supports the fruit concentrate, spicy, playful, energetic and subtly warm in character, a hedonistic drinking pleasure at a very high level.

A stunner, with a glorious aromatic display of mulled plum, blackberry and cherry notes seamlessly melded with rooibos tea, singed balsa wood and ground vanilla bean accents. The structure is so fine-grained that it's almost hard to find, but the marathonesque length shows it's there. As gorgeous as it is, this remains a hair behind the modern greats in terms of concentration. Still, it should hold at this peak for some time. Awfully close to the '89, but sometimes we have to split hairs.

Mellow and meticulous on the attack, very, very fruity on the development, airy and melting, but a touch lively on the finish, the wine ends perfumed, with good length. Variations from one bottle to another appear.

Very deep flavoured and concentrated with a hint of yeast extract (Marmite). Bold, dark and savoury with some sweetness although the sweet aspects of this wine were not emphasised by the fact that it was served immediately after a Rousseau Clos St-Jacques 1999. Not a wine to turn down.
