The Wine Palate: The 2014 Yquem has 146 grams per liter of residual sugar, 13.5 % alcohol, and a pH of 3.6, with a pale to medium straw-gold color. It begins with a single, pure, resonating note of orange blossom before unfurling to include provocative scents of aniseed, white pepper, allspice, and beach sand, followed by an intense core of lime cordial and green mango. Pow - the palate hits you like a crashing wave of vibrant citrus fruits and savory/spicy sparks, framed by the plushest of textures and a razor cut line of freshness, finishing with incredible length and vigor. This is a masterpiece.

Barrel Sample. Apricot tones with lively acidity give this rich wine a vein of freshness. Pear and white peach notes offer weight, while a lime backbone brings levity. There is a richness from the botrytis that is lifted by this wines delicious freshness.

Tasted blind. Mid gold. Deep apricot aroma. Chewy, very sweet and a bit sweet-sour on the finish. Intense, and the sweetness is balanced by the flavour of bitter orange that helps with the balance. Great concentration and length. When to drink: 2022 to 2045

Golden yellow color. Intense and subtle nose, with ripe fruit, menthol and very fresh notes. Mellow and melting palate, with an airy body, developing flavorsome, towards a long complex, sappy and noble finish.

Very much on the honeyed, citrus side of the style range. Lots of sweet, ripe, very ripe and overripe yellow fruits, ranging from pineapple and grapefruits to candied lemons. There is a lot of sweetness to the wine, paired with bracing acidity at 4.9 grams per liter, coupled with 135 grams of residual sugar, for those of you that like the numbers. This could be a thinking man's Yquem.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is an absolute reference for great sweet wines and occupies a unique place in the wine history of Bordeaux. Located in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the estate benefits from exceptional terroir and microclimate that favor the development of botrytis cinerea. During the official classification of 1855, Château d'Yquem obtained an unparalleled status by being consecrated Premier Cru Supérieur, a unique distinction among the great classified growths.

The identity of Château d'Yquem is based on extreme rigor at every stage of production: very low yields, harvesting by successive selections and rigorous selection of grapes. Long owned by the Lur Saluces family, the estate has belonged since 1997 to the LVMH group, which has chosen to preserve the technical independence and historical rigor of the château.

In great years, Château d'Yquem gives birth to vintages that have become emblematic, such as Château d'Yquem 1908, Château d'Yquem 1921, Château d'Yquem 1945, Château d'Yquem 1949, Château d'Yquem 1967, Château d'Yquem 2009, illustrating an exceptional aging capacity, which can extend over several decades, or even beyond.
