Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
With a deep copper hue, the aromatics are explosive! Chocolate, coffee, crème brulee, orange, caramel, flowers, spice, butterscotch, earth and cocoa are revealed. Silky, velvet drenched layers of orange coated with cocoa and chocolate remain on the palate for well over 60 seconds. Chateau d’Yquem is expensive and some consumers feel when compared to other Sauternes, Chateau d’Yquem is not worth the difference in price. That is because they have never experienced a fully mature vintage of Chateau d’Yquem. At 75 years of age, this wine is still going to improve for another 25-50 or even 75 more years!

Explosive bouquet. A superb bottle despite a rather varnishly, singed, raisiny fragrance; very sweet, tremendously rich, fleshy, almost fat... and so on.

Golden and yellow colour, very very sweet and rich – almost rum toffee nose. Essence of crème caramel but with great structure – still chewy. Long and very fresh. Some astringency on the finish. Very mellow nose that’s almost rancio – you could almost take this for a Madeira. Lots of acidity. Very complete. Very long and great nobility and confidence. Interesting almost vegetal element.

Deep brown-orange color with a palate that is bordering on caramel with layers of dried flowers, toffee and mango tart. There is still amazing acid backbone and an intense energy to this wine that is nearly 80 years old. What a spectacular Yquem, still exhibiting its full spendor.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The 1937 Chateau d’Yquem was made in a year when there was a severe drought in Sauternes, though the crop was harvested between September 21 and November 3, the heart of the crop was picked during a warm dry spell between October 1-21. It is a legendary wine, but on this occasion it was easily surpassed. Having said that, winemaker Sandrine Garbay mentioned that this was not the best bottle and that on its day it can rank alongside the 1945. On any other day, this would have been the wine of the tasting. It has a deep mahogany color. The nose gently unfurls in the glass with scents of orange rind, mandarin, honeysuckle and melted candle wax. The palate is linear and correct on the entry and certainly gives notice of an immensely powerful Yquem, even if this bottle does not possess the delineation and tension of the 1945. This particular bottle might suggest that the 1937 is past its lofty peak, although there is enough here to suggest that the next might deliver nirvana.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

The Château d'Yquem is an area of 133 hectares including 113 hectares of vineyards, 102 acres operated, south of Bordeaux in Sauternes region that produces a sweet white wine ranked Premier Cru Superior, the only wine from the Sauternes category.

It is considered by many as the best Sauternes. The yield is only 6 hectoliters per hectare and in some years, if the quality is not deemed sufficient, the bottles are not sold under this label.

The wines are characterized by their complexity due to a significant amount of residual sugar and flavorings made by Botrytis cinerea. A relatively high acidity helps offset the sweetness. Another characteristic for which Château d'Yquem is known is his longevity. In good years does present a bottle of his outstanding after one or two decades in a cellar and with care it will keep for a century or more, adding to the complexity...

Since 1959 Chateau d'Yquem produces a dry white wine named "Y" (and before 2004 "Y Lur-Saluces") makes an equal proportion of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. This wine, like great wine is not produced every year. The 2005 vintage was the first vintage of Yquem offered for sale en primeur.
