Optimal tasting window: 2015 to 2029

Château note: A very dry year, growing increasingly hot, even scorching in September with 14 days above 30°C; the harvest is easy and uninterrupted, the only risk being that the alcohol level reaches extreme heights, brushing 26 degrees of potential alcohol. A monument of power, richness and a deeply amber colour that sets it apart from afar.

Top shoulder level and with fully wet but solid cork. Where does one begin to describe this and even more how does one rate it. Dark in colour and shines through the early century whiter than normal bottle with all the hand made flaws ( the bottle is itself a story) . Rich but with impressive acidity, rich apricot, honey. An exceptional experience and albeit one can argue about the wine the experience and the emotion it invokes can only be described as perfect.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Mahogany in color, the nose showed off its caramel, butterscotch, orange rind, cooked apricot, spice and cocoa dusted orange tinted, tropical fruit character with ease. The wine still had viscosity and sweetness. I am not sure this was a perfect bottle as the color seemed a bit too dark. I imagine a better stored bottle would be off the charts!

Recorked in 1994. Lacks a bit of harmony, but shows good ripeness and crème brûlée character along with some drying cedar notes. Also delivers intense spice, chocolate, mocha and dried apricot flavors.

Gismondi On Wine : 29 Mon dieu, mon dieu, mon dieu, sighed Pierre Lurton upon smelling his glass of '29. It was a dry summer with temperatures above 30 degrees. September was hot and very dry. The harvest started 20 September and lasted 19 days. It was a rich year with potential alcohol estimated at 22 degrees about the maximum for d'Yquem if you want the fermentation to work well according to Lurton. Cocoa and honeyed fruit in an otherwise complex and sophisticated nose. It's fat and sweet on the palate but with high acidity and it is really showing its youth. Seems 20 years younger. A sublime experience. Very impressive.

Shaded dark reddish brown. According to Richard Olney, who wrote the famous monograph on Yquem, this wine was always mahogany coloured. So dense! Hambleton Hall's sommelier Dominique Baduel suggests it’s like liquorice. Sweet, almost coconut nose. Very big, sweet but with lots of acidity. Macerated plums and extraordinarily fresh. No sign of any oxidation. Very slightly chewy on the end.

Sheer perfection on all but one of several memorable occasions. To summarize, slight coulour variation though mostly a deep, rich amber, some a rose-tinted tawny...always sweet never seeming to dry out, its flavour being a concentration of peaches and cream, apricots, peeled sultanas, sometimes slightly chocolately, with great length and exquisite aftertaste.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is an absolute reference for great sweet wines and occupies a unique place in the wine history of Bordeaux. Located in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the estate benefits from exceptional terroir and microclimate that favor the development of botrytis cinerea. During the official classification of 1855, Château d'Yquem obtained an unparalleled status by being consecrated Premier Cru Supérieur, a unique distinction among the great classified growths.

The identity of Château d'Yquem is based on extreme rigor at every stage of production: very low yields, harvesting by successive selections and rigorous selection of grapes. Long owned by the Lur Saluces family, the estate has belonged since 1997 to the LVMH group, which has chosen to preserve the technical independence and historical rigor of the château.

In great years, Château d'Yquem gives birth to vintages that have become emblematic, such as Château d'Yquem 1908, Château d'Yquem 1921, Château d'Yquem 1945, Château d'Yquem 1949, Château d'Yquem 1967, Château d'Yquem 2009, illustrating an exceptional aging capacity, which can extend over several decades, or even beyond.
