In Bordeaux, harvests were abundant and quality was excellent. Favored by a hot summer that led to grape over-ripening, the châteaux were able to produce very pleasant, fruity and well-balanced wines. The Sauternes are remarkable. That was not the case in Gevrey-Chambertin, where damp conditions caused rot, though enough grapes were salvaged. Red Burgundies are fruity, with the aromas so characteristic of Pinot Noir. The whites are full-bodied wines with high alcohol levels and good acidity.

Bordeaux produced some exceptional wines. Wines from the Margaux appellation are even considered better than those of the 1982 vintage. The sweet wines are also excellent, fruity and refined.
In Burgundy, wine quality varies, posing a challenge across most appellations. Favor the reds from the Côte de Beaune and the wines of the Côte de Nuits, which remain excellent. The whites tend to be very full-bodied, leaning more toward opulence than refined elegance because of the damp conditions late in the season.
The northern Rhône reds are superb, particularly those from the Hermitage appellation.
