This fully mature wine exhibits a certain rusticity to its aggressive tannin, a characteristic I do not believe will ever fully dissipate. Dark garnet-colored with amber at the edge, the wine offers forceful aromatics consisting of damp earth (or is it a hint of black truffles?). It is medium-bodied, with excellent fruit, but coarse tannin in the finish keeps this wine from receiving an outstanding rating.

Château l'Arrosée
Château l'Arrosée is a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, located on the South Coast of Saint-Emilion. Located on the southern front of the Saint-Emilion hillsides, in the extension of Ausone, Château l'Arrosée is distinguished by two types of soils planted in the same proportion of three grape varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc). Part of the vineyard planted on the sheltered slope southwest of Saint-Emilion benefits from maximum sunshine, for the clay-silt-limestone soil. This exposure promotes harvest maturity, especially since the soil offers good regulation of plant nutrition in both water and mineral salts. Historically, Château l'Arrosée owes its name to the presence of an underground spring. The second part of the vineyard occupies sandy-loam soils at the foot of the slope. This dual terroir contributes to the complexity and typicity of the vineyard. 60% Merlot is blended with 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. A contribution of Cabernets sets this wine apart from other vineyards in the appellation. The average age of its vines is 35 years, and 45 for the oldest. Its cultivation follows traditional methods, de-budding, green harvesting, leaf removal. The harvest is manual and very selective sorting. After passing through temperature-controlled vats, the wine ages for 15 months in new barrels. The annual production of Château l'Arrosée is around 40,000 bottles.
