Talk about a thrill a second, as well as unprecedented decadence (at least for me), consider the rarity of a flight of six double magnums of Petrus! Because there were not many people at the tasting, there was the possibility of having several large glasses of these wines, making judging them all the more fun. And let's not forget the medical benefit of flushing the fat out of one's arteries with such remarkable juice! The 1980 Petrus turned in a surprisingly strong performance. A roasted herb, melted road tar, and sweet, jammy-scented nose is followed by a rich, medium to full-bodied wine with considerable length. It appears to have become more impressive with age. Could this wine really be superior to the 1981 and 1979?

The crowd was split about what was the wine of the flight, and the 1980 Petrus made an unexpected claim for that title. This was a party Petrus with its wild nose, which was dominated by green olives. There was this Burgundian wildness here, and ‘layers of flavors’ per The Mogul. The palate was lush and tasty, another vintage in a great spot, and certainly the surpri se of the night so far.

One of the best wines from a light vintage. Developed tobacco and vanilla follwo through to smoky medium-bodied flavors. Quite soft but short on the finish

The Petrus estate derives its name from a village called "Petrus". Its history is recent and yet this wine is already a legend. Throughout the nineteenth century the area belonged to the Arnaud family. In 1925, a woman from the Libourne region, Ms. Loubat, takes shares in the property. Twenty years later she is the sole owner. Understanding that the wines of the Medoc sell for more than wines of Pomerol, in particular her wines, she did everything she could to take advantage of such a promising terroir.  In a few decades the myth was born. In 1961, Mrs Lacoste and Mr. Lignac, niece and nephew of Mrs. Loubat  inherit the estate. The vineyard is based on the highest hill of the designation, culminating at an altitude of 40 meters. The soil consists mainly of clay which  is well suited to Merlot which constitutes 95% of the plantings. The 12 hectares are the subject of constant work and a constant obsession with détail.  It is thought that Pétrus is more accessible to tasting than  some of its illustrious colleagues..
