Expert's opinions

fully mature, the wine is medium/full bodied, with a fresh, sweet, cassis, cherry, tobacco, spice and green leafy profile. Soft, polished and deceptively easy to drink, there is no reason not to be drinking your bottles, as this is not going to get better from here. 93 Points

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Wow, this is an exceptional bottle of Mouton ’85, one that had been kept in perfect conditions, i.e. at the chateau until April ’08 and subsequently opened dining with my boss and his family at “The Square”. The nose is simple sublime, marked by soft, earthy red-berried fruits, hints of cigar box and graphite with a bewitching sense of delineation and natural grace that I have note noticed on previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied, beautifully balanced and graceful and whilst never as ambitious as the following vintage Mouton, is content just to satiate the imbiber. Wonderful fresh, tobacco-led finish and superb length. It put a smile on my boss’s face – that is what wine should do. I have a feeling that unless another bottle is proffered at the chateau, this might be the best Mouton ’85 I will ever drink! Drink now-2020. Tasted June 2008.

Rich and sweet initially on the nose but on the palate it's a little bit ordinary – not obviously first growth intensity (this was served blind). Refined and fresh but lightish.

This Mouton is a wonderful surprise. I expected it to be good but was impressed with the wine's intensity, youthfulness and balanced sweet dried fruit flvors. This wine is harmony in carnate with a long length filled with sweet fruit flavors. The large format size adds to the wine's youthful vigor.

Falstaff January - 2010
Falstaff
Deep ruby garnet in colour, with a broad watery rim. Dark berry jam on the nose, with some cassis, blackberry and chocolate, as well as suede notes and the exotic savourinesss of cinnamon. A finely roasted note of mocha also emerges, making for an attractive, typical bouquet. Elegant on the palate, with almost a hint of broadness thanks to the distinctive tannins that are well integrated. The core of sweet dark berry continues through to the finish, with a touch of dark chocolate too. It's finely structured, with some somewhat demanding elements on the finish. Good length, a multi-faceted food companion.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only estate in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Deuxième Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate — then known as Brane-Mouton — became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernized the vineyard, developed the cellars, and imposed an absolute commitment to quality, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change."

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This pursuit of excellence can also be found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

From the mythical 1945 and 1961 vintages to the 1982 vintage and the 1996 wine, through to a more recent year such as the 2004 wine, the wines of Château Mouton Rothschild rank among the most coveted in the world of wine. The estate complements its grand wine with a second wine, Le Petit Mouton, created in 1993, and a rare white, Aile d'Argent.
