1987 CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1987

The Mouton Rothschild 1987 label pays a final tribute to Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Produced by the Swiss painter Hans Erni, the work highlights the portrait of the Baron adorned with bunches of grapes and rams' horns, reminiscent of the emblem of Château Mouton Rothschild. This is how, through this painting, Hans Erni transforms his model into a true legend of wine.
Château Mouton Rothschild 1987 reveals notes of wax, fruits such as raspberry and cherry as well as aromas of undergrowth. This Premier Cru Classé is made from 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot.

Jean-Marc Quarin April - 2002

The color remains beautiful. The nose has the "dead leaf" and cigar note of imperfectly ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. This is reminiscent of an older style of Bordeaux wines. On the palate, this wine is completely focused on the attack where it immediately plays on suavity. The body is good for a vintage considered very average, especially in the middle of the mouth. The good surprise comes from the permanence of the frame which does not crush in the second part of the mouth, as in 92. The wine finishes on a pleasant and tasty melt with a still perceptible tannin. Drink it now.

One of the top '87s we've tasted. This is a rich, thick, concentrated wine with layers of plum, currant, nutmeg and vanilla flavors and full tannins on the finish. A trace of mineral comes through.

Jeannie Cho Lee May - 2016

At first the wine was sweet and soft, fully mature, but the flavors died quickly in the glass after just an hour. Tannins are weak as is the rest of the wine. It is a delicious red that is starting its decline.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1987 would appear to be a sure bet for the wine of the vintage. It remains the most complete and backward 1987 Medoc, with at least 10-15 years of aging potential. The touching dedication from the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild's daughter on the label should also be noted. 1987 was the last vintage produced by the Baron, and thus will probably fetch a fortune in 40 or 50 years. One of the deepest and most opaque wines of the vintage, with a tight, yet promising bouquet of cedar and blackcurrants, this wine exhibits surprising depth, medium to full body, and plenty of tannin in the finish. An amazingly powerful wine for the vintage, it is richer than the 1989 and 1990!

Falstaff December - 2006

Well-covered ruby ??garnet, violet reflections. Moist bread on the nose, slightly unclean spice, dried fruit, somewhat diffuse, fresh plum notes on the palate, strong tannins, still lively, dry finish. 2006 from a magnum: delicate leafy undertone, some cream and caramel. A delicate sweetness on the palate, of plum stew, fine, rather subtle tannins, a rather delicate Mouton with ripe aromas in the aftertaste.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Mouton Rothschild is arguably one of the best-known wine estates in the world. In AOC Pauillac, since 1973 it has been First Classified Growth in the official classification of Bordeaux wines of 1855.

Bought in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, Brane Mouton became legendary under the name of Château Mouton-Rothschild. It is with the advent of Baron Philippe de Rothschild that Mouton really becomes the monumental 1er Cru that it is today. Mouton Rothschild 1945 and 1982 are among their finest vintages. In addition to the construction of cellars and buildings, and the accession to Premier Cru status, it is the passion of a lifetime rediscovered in action by this exceptional man.

Classified as a Second Classified Growth in 1855, Château Mouton Rothschild has been a Premier Classified Growth since 1973. Its motto "First not then, second not deign, Mouton am" thus became "First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change".

The elegance and magic of this wine have thus charmed the greatest contemporary artists who, each year, illustrate with their art the priceless wines of Mouton by creating an original work on the label. Château D'Armailhac and Château Clerc Milon follow in the footsteps of this quality concern of the Rothschild family.

The great vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are: 1994, 1989, 1986, 1985, 1983, 1982, 1970, 1966, 1962, 1961, 1959, 1955, 1953, 1949, 1947, 1945
