CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 2004

To drink between 2014 and 2055

Since 1945, the label of Mouton has been illustrated by the work of an artist. Generally dedicated to the vine and wine, it sometimes celebrates a historical event. Château Mouton Rothschild dedicated the 2004 label to celebrate the Centenary of the Entente Cordiale, concluded on April 8, 1904 between Great Britain and France. It was Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, a talented painter and direct descendant of Edward VII, who was approached. The Prince agreed that the label of Mouton Rothschild 2004 would be illustrated by one of his watercolours, inspired by a French landscape, to which he kindly added a few words: « To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Entente Cordiale – Charles, 2004 ».
Château Mouton Rothschild 2004 has a subtle and complex nose, with notes of red fruits, quince paste, liquorice and oak. This premier cru classé is composed of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It is a wine of harmony and class.

Jean-Marc Quarin November - 2021

This wine is enchanting at the moment. Bright, fruity and smoky nose. The palate seduces with its mid-palate presence in a vintage of high production. Enveloped tannicity. Rather long finish, with a meticulous grain, and a return of the perfume. A real delight.

Beautiful aromas of crushed berries and chocolate, with hints of Indian spices. Full-bodied, with silky, velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. A lovely wine for the vintage. This is the first wine from the new winemaking team at Mouton and is showing really well. Best after 2011.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Still quite youthful, even though it lacks the concentration and flamboyance, the wine still has plenty to offer. Medium/full-bodied, the wine focuses on cedar, tobacco leaf, red currants and forest floor notes in the perfume, the nose. Fresh, bright red fruits and spice box notes on the soft refined palate complete the finish. The wine needs another 5 years n the cellar before it moves completely into its secondary stage.

Falstaff June - 2018

Medium ruby red with a broad, bright rim. On the nose, fine roasted aromas, black cherries and cassis, after airing with some wild, animal notes. On the palate full-bodied with hints of dark forest berries, lively tannins and a subtle nougat finish. Well developed, rather slender in style.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
It came across tight and broody on the nose, a hint of seaweed tincturing the black fruit, later on a whiff of smoke. It does not feel as refined as either the 2004 Lafite-Rothschild or the 2004 Latour. The palate is medium-bodied and shows more class than the aromatics: cohesive and with just the right amount of grip, a little chewy perhaps but with a pleasant saline sensation towards the "correct" finish. It ticks all the boxes but does not go that extra mile.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only wine from the official 1855 Bordeaux classification to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, after having been initially classified as Second Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then named Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernized the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed absolute quality standards, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascension: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change".

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by renowned contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This quest for excellence is also found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are:
