Wow , just a great bottle. Still bright, belies its age, sweet, cassis, leather, iron /ferrous/ palate still excellent, long , complex, still has structural tannins. Its drinking window still strong. Remarkable for 46 year old Bordeaux

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The first vintage made under the expert management of Jean-Eugene Borie and his son, Xavier, the 1978 remains a classic Pauillac with fine cellaring potential. Dark ruby garnet with a ripe, intense bouquet of cassis, fruit, cedar, and vanillin oakiness, this wine is rich, with excellent body and the tannins quickly melting away. It can be drunk now or cellared for another decade.

Jean-Marc Quarin June - 1993

Dark red color. Good intensity. Evolved and still brilliant. Nose of medium intensity. Fine. Fresh and fruity. More intense when swirled. Nuances of fur and meaty notes. Quite complex with a vegetal touch. Clean attack developing on an ample and juicy structure, very fruity, with good concentration. Slow tannic evolution remarkably balanced that evolves richly, towards a silky and somewhat austere finish where very ripe fruits persist for a long time. Very long finish where refined notes are found. Great wine to start drinking.

Jancis Robinson August - 2025

Brick red with a mahogany edge. Forest-floor and mint aromas and flavour. Still some sweetness to the fruit but clearly evolved. Fresh but with a short, drying finish. Of historical interest but has definitely plateaued. Has held up well, though.

Past its prime, the wine shows more acidity and secondary characteristics than fruit. Drink up as it's only going to continue fading. That being said, 1978 is the first vintage for the owner of the chateau, so it was a fun historic treat to taste, in that context.

Château Grand Puy Lacoste
Château Grand Puy Lacoste

Château Grand-Puy Lacoste is a Bordeaux wine estate. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Médoc classification, the Château has no less than hectares of vines.

The château also produces a second wine: Lacoste-Borie. It is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and of course Merlot grape varieties.

The outstanding years of Château Grand-Puy Lacoste are undoubtedly 1947, the 1949 wines, the vintages 1959, 1970, and 1982. Finally, the vintages 1986, 1990, the 1994 wines and 2009 grand crus are excellent.
